Karen and Olivia Newton-John have a small round table on the patio at a posh out of the way restaurant in Beverly Hills, California. It's a warm sunny January day.
"What's taking our waiter," Karen taps her fingers on the table.
"Hush Karen," Olivia gestures with her index finger across her lips.
"Well we've," Karen looks at her watch, "been waiting over five minutes. It's not like we're eating at Denny's or Norms."
Olivia reaches across to the empty chair next to her and grabs her small brown leather clutch. She snaps the purse open and pulls a cigarette out.
"Do you mind if I smoke Karen?"
Karen laughs, "When did you start smoking Livvy? You've got to be kidding."
Olivia lights the cigarette.
"No, no", Karen gestures Olivia away with her hand. "No, Olivia the smoke irritates my throat. I need to be in tip top shape. After all I'll be recording a solo album soon and it's got to be better than anything else I've ever done."
Olivia puts the cigarette out, "Oh you've seen Phil?"
"No, not yet, but we've spoken on the phone twice." Werner and I are going to meet with him next week. We're going to talk contracts. Hopefully we'll begin recording in March."
Finally the waiter shows up. Karen gives the waiter, who is in his mid-20's, a double take and gives him one of her famous killer smiles.
"I apologize for the delay", the Waiter says.
Karen smiles and says, "Oh we hardly even noticed."
"Thank you for your patience," the waiter named Patrick responds. "Today ladies we have a wonderful apple martini on special. May I interest you in a martini or anything to drink?"
Olivia playfully replies, "Well sir," Olivia gestures toward Karen, "This is the one and only Karen Carpenter. She doesn't drink liquor or smoke cigarettes in order to preserve her silky smooth voice. But, I'll have one of those Apple Martinis.
Karen now with red blushing cheeks just laughs.
the waiter directs his attention to Karen, "And you Miss Carpenter? What may I interest you in?"
Again Karen chuckles, "Iced Tea. That would be nice. With lemon."
The waiter continues, "Our feature of the day is the delicious pepper crusted grilled halibut. May I start you out with an order of our scrumptious sauteed stuffed mushrooms?"
"Ummm that sounds delicious," Karen comments and looks toward Olivia.
"Yeah, lets go for it," Olivia giggles.
"No," Karen says, "neither of us need the appetizer."
"You're right Karen. You're always the voice of reason. No sauteed mushrooms," Olivia says to the waiter.
The waiter responds, "Do you need a few minutes to look at the menu?"
"No," Karen quickly says, "We're ready to order."
Olivia fumbles with her menu as Karen begins ordering.
That pepper crusted halibut sounds very tasty. I'll have that. Does it come with a salad?" Karen asks.
"Yes, which dressing would you like."
"Do you have a raspberry vinaigrette?"
"Yes. One salad with raspberry vinaigrette."
"Are you ready ma'am?", the waiter looks over to Olivia.
"Yes, I'll have the French dip Au jus."
"Thank you ladies. I will return shortly with your beverages."
As Patrick walks away Olivia softly whispers to Karen, "You like him."
"Am I that obvious?" Karen asks.
"Transparent," Olivia answers.
The rest of the lunch goes the same with more trivial and light hearted conversation. And more flirting with the waiter. At the end of the meal Karen and Olivia share a slice of apple pie a la mode for dessert.
