One day way back in the summer of 1973 me & a mate were walking in the countryside with his dog & he had this tiny radio on when this beaut of a song came on. It stopped me in my tracks & I didnt know what it was until a few months later but all I remember was these words"Sha la la la & Woa Woa Woa. I never forgot those words & when the song had finished all I remember was the sound of Skylarks singing as they flew over head & the murmour of cows in the next field & with the light breeze & hot sun I felt I had arrived in heaven. Feb1974. Waiting for my dinner I was watching TOTPS on TV when this film of a woman singing another beaut of a song on stage with people all around her stopped me breathing. Yet again such a fab song. Jan 1975. I kept hearing this other fab song & actually listened to hear who the singers were...The Postmen said the DJ? I had to buy that record. I was 13. My family were very poor( AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! ) 2 weeks later my mother entrusted me with a small amount of money to by some groceries in town & with the change GET A HAIR CUT!!!. Walking past the record store with my shopping on the way to the barbars I passed the record store & this song was comin outta the speakers. MY SONG. I stopped & listened & B4 I knew what I was doin had gone in side & said I gotta have that song your playin. who/what was it." Carpenters "came the reply." Ill have one" said I & 50 pence later I stood outside the store clutching my illgotten gain...My haircut money entrusted to me by my mother was now a disc with a great big A & M label on it. Reality set in & I began to wonder how on earth I was gonna explain the NON haircut, loss of money & a record. We were really poor in those days & every penny counted ( I know AHHHHHHHH) For two hours I trudged the streets thinking up some explanation worried sick & ashamed of my ever growing deceit & eventually went home to face the music... geddit no! oh well please yourselves. There was no one in when I arrived & so I rushed upstairs to my room & got out my tiny little player & shaking I played the song...Oh god I was hooked ..It was fab I still remember the exhillerance to this day..I played the song over & over again lovin it more each time. The B side was good too but it was the postman side that got me everytime. I was just playing it for the 12 or so time when a dark shadow fell across my face...mum had returned & had a face on her like a voodoo doll complete with pins & mask......Tune in next time for the next thrilling installment of Now & Then-My Carpenters Life...If this is ok with you Rick.
