Oh Rick, that's really a fantastic topic to talk about. I could list hundreds of "guilty pleasures" here. There are a lot of songs that I like and I'm surprised by myself about it..
These are the four songs that came onto my mind directly after reading your post:
Toxic and I'm a slave 4 U - Britney Spears Play - Jennifer Lopez Stars are Blind - Paris Hilton

I really like Ravens version, too. I remember her from the Cosby Show and did not know that shes still in the media. Her song sounds kinda 90s. Even though it's not my favourite musical genre, I'm really into some kinds of hip hop and Black Music in general. But as you just mentioned: someones favourite can be the "guilty pleasure" of another person, like the Carpenters.

I love R&B and that is not a guilty pleasure for me. The only sections of R&B I don't really care for are hip hop and rap... but love funk, classic soul, disco and others... disco jazz is a genre I really liked in the mid to late 70's. Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Earth Wind and Fire, War, Aretha Franklin, Kool and the Gang, Graham Central Station, Dazz Band, Zapp, Cameo, Gap Band and Parliament are part of my long list of favorites in the R&B/Soul genre. Another guilty pleasure for me would be "Baby, I Love You" by Jennifer Lopez... generally I don't really care for her music or her movies... but this particular song I do like quite a bit. Guilty pleasure from the past... "Deep Purple" by Donny and Marie... oddly enough I've never really cared for Donny and Marie... quite a few people in cyberland assume I'm a Donny and Marie fan because I'm a Carpenters fan. It's kind of funny how most people think that all Carpenters fans also love Donny and Marie... well, yeah, I love them because they are human beings... just like I am and we all are and we all deserve to be loved... but their music for the most part doesn't thrill me... though Donny and Marie and also Marie solo and the Osmonds have recorded a handful of songs I actually like. Those songs would be... OsmondsOne Bad Apple 1971 Down By The Lazy River 1972 Donny and MarieMorning Side of The Mountain 1974 Deep Purple 1975 Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing 1976 On The Shelf 1978 Marie OsmondThis Is The Way I Feel 1977 Don't really care for any of Donny Osmond's solo records... songs like "Sweet and Innocent", "Go Away Little Girl" and "Puppy Love" just don't hit the spot for me. But again it's all a matter of perspective.

Hey Rick, my mother is really in to that funky classic soul music. So many of the artists you named used to be played on our house in my childhood. I love R&B and that is not a guilty pleasure for me. The only sections of R&B I don't really care for are hip hop and rap... I have to say, that I have a problem with the whole lifestyle and attitude surrounding todays hip hop artists, but there are some songs that I really do rate highly: The Roots - The Seed (2.0) Jay-Z feat. Chris Martin - Beach Chair (this one could be especially interesting for you) Jay-Z - Anything Common Sense - G.O.D. (Gaining One's Definition) Common Sense feat. Lauryn Hill - Retrospect for Life Nas - One Love Nas - I can Bahamadia - Uknowhowwedu Xzibit - Paparazzi Snoop Dogg - Drop it like it's hot Snoop Dogg feat. Charlie Wilson & Justin Timberlake - Signs Busta Rhymes - Gimme some mo Outkast - Atliens Outkast - Rosa Parks Missy Elliott - Sock it to me some great German Hip Hop Songs with profound lyrics, that we used to listen to back in the 90s during our school days: Curse - Wahre Liebe www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7CxWxRYGnQFettes Brot - Lieblingslied www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO22nEJiuAcDoppelkopf - Balance www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhx382_NAYwMellowbag & Freundeskeis feat. Mr. Gentleman - Tabula Rasa www.youtube.com/watch?v=khRDmsjxxWgFreundeskreis - Wenn der Vorhang fällt www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTXVwOSfH9EAbsolute Beginner feat. Samy Deluxe - Füchse www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgvfWTCq-5g...unfortunately the German Hip Hop Scene today is dominated by (Pseudo) Gangsta Rap.

I love those Osmond songs also.I love Marie's song Paper Roses normally I don't like that kind of country music.I love the time of pop music and country that people like Carole King and the Carpenters recorded.Same with This Is The Way That I Feel.I don't like most of that disco type music from the late 70s.Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing is a good song one of my all time favorites.
Yet you can connect The Carpenters with the Osmonds because Marie was a big fan of theirs in the 70s (not sure if she is still now),Karen's death is what woke Marie up about her weight problem, and Karen 'dated' Alan for a little bit.It was more of like how Marie 'dated' Andy Gibb in the 70s,they were more of friends than boyfriend/girlfriend.Karen was at one end of the music business and at the time Alan was at the other end of it.With Marie and Andy it was more of he wanted to do more with Marie than what Marie's religion would allow. Also I was taking notes from a Osmond fan site and during the Donny and Marie show's 4 season run Marie sang like 9 or 10 Carpenters songs. So I'm not sure if that clears up the line just saying. Honestly I don't see how other people could assume automatically that if a person is a Carpenters fan they are a fan of Donny and Marie. Both are at different ends of pop music or easy listening.

Hey Sunnybunny.. you are quite an intelligent young person. i respect your views. I know I can be hard on Donny and Marie... but when it comes right down to it... they are good at what they do and have done... and they seem like really nice people.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts... on the disco thing... you've got to check out some of the better disco artists... there was some outstanding disco music at that time... such as alomst anything by Donna Summer... her rendition of "MacArthur Park" is excellent... and she's one of the best of the best when it comes to vocal power. Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" is also outstanding and "Funky Town" by Lipps Inc is another classic of classic. One of my personal favorites is "Boogie Nights" by Heatwave. Also when it comes to music the Carpenters and the Osmonds are really different. Here have the Carpenters who did ballads and the serious kind of music and then we have the Osmonds not saying they didn't have their fair share of 'serious' hits but when both the Carpenters and the Osmonds were at their high in their careers that was true. The Osmonds were doing mainly teeny bopper popish music and the Carpenters were doing ballads and love songs.
The other night I was reading some in a book about Barry Manilow,Olivia Newton-John,the Gibb brothers, and people like that (the book came out in 1979) and I was reading the pages they had on Donny and Marie and they said 'They're the hottest brother and sister act in the pop-music business, much bigger than Richard and Karen Carpenter'.Probably at the time they were because Karen was busy doing other things while Richard was in rehab.Plus they had cut down on their touring some. All depends on the person's view point.
My mom says I know so much because I've been raised all my life around people like Barry Manilow,Andy Gibb, the Bee Gees, and people like that. When I was 4,I could probably tell you who Andy Gibb and the Bee Gees were or at least have a slight clue who they were. When I was 7 or 8 I could name all the member of the Beatles just off the top of my head.Plus if I have a question about something I look it up on the computer and ususually find something in 5 minutes or less maybe more but like 5 minutes more. Most of the people I like my mom likes. Also around Christmas or so I got about 9 books about the Osmonds in one lot I had 4 but for the price it was worth it and one was the same book that I already had but it was a different cover and it was softcover. So I thought why not and if I want to know if something like photos is a good deal I ask my mom just like I did with the book. She told to keep it that it was different.Still I respect your opinion on the Osmonds.

But I can absolutely understand that you don't like the song. I'd call myself pretty open-minded, too, but there are musical genres that I just loath (like Hard Rock, Heavy Metal) and I think that's OK, you can't care about everything.. You can count on that: I'll keep on making musical suggestions. Maybe I'll find even a Rap Song that you're gonna like - you aroused my ambition This morning, before work, I went to the customhouse and collected my "Carpenters - The Essential Collection" CD-Box. I'm beside myself with joy!!! I just can't stop listening to the first CD with those home recorded and demo songs on it. This is simply terrific!! I have to say until today I never heard any Carpenters-Songs before "Ticket to Ride".. But actually this comes pretty close to the music I usually listened to, before the Carpenters, especially those jazzy tunes. I think it's kind of funny that I began to love the Carpenters for a style of music that I actually never cared about that much before and now finally get to know their early songs that correspond 100% to my actual taste of music. This is somehow like "putting the cart before the horse".. Whatever, it's fantastic (the cart and the horse !!!

As you may know Donna Summer used to live in Munich for quite a few years I think. In 2001 there was something like a Giorgio Moroder - Renaissance in Germany. There was a Remix-Album released, that of course featured a lot of the songs he produced for Donna Summer. My mother used to listen to this kind of music a lot, but that's when I somehow rediscovered Disco Music for me. I think Giorgio Moroder is an excellent producer and together with Donna Summer they made some all-time classics. But there's another producer of that genre that I like even more than Moroder. I have no idea how popular he was/is in the US but I think he made some of the finest songs in the disco genre. His name is Cerrone. I took notice of him in 2001 when Bob Sinclair released his Remix-Album ("Cerrone by Bob Sinclair") which is the best Remix Album I know. Everyone who is into disco should check this out!
