Here are a few recent releases I'd like to share with everyone.
Snow Patrol - Eyes Open: Snow Patrol is often compared to Coldplay, though they have a bit more aggressive sound. This is modern rock at it's very best.
Tom Petty - Highway Companion: This is Petty's first release in four years. Petty employed Jeff Lynne (ELO, Travelin' Wilbury's) as producer for this work. The result is what I consider to be his best album in the past twenty. The music is consistent from beginning to end.
Cat Power - The Greatest: Cat Power is American Singer-Songwriter Chan Marshall. Her music is minimalist and often poetic. She plays both piano and guitar with southern styled vocals. Cat Power (Chan Marshall) is truly a one of a kind. Her voice is dark, mysterious and sultry. Her songs are full of mystery, love and heartbreak. "The Greatest" (which is not a greatest hits album) was recorded in Memphis at Ardent Studios with many pioneers of the Southern soul sound (ie; Blue-eyed soul). All the songs are mournfully beautiful, wonderfully performed by Chan whose voice is quite flexible.
Donavon Frankenreiter - Move By Yourself: This is my pick for album of the year. This one is outstanding all the way through. Donavon is easily one of the finest male vocalists in the past ten years. His vocal style is somewhat reminiscent of Dave Matthews or Jack Johnson, though Donavon is much more refined, clear, smooth and heartfelt. Frankenreiter is the real thing. He will be around for years to come. His music is a combination of 70's funk sounds (ie Stevie Wonder) and 70's southern classic rock (such as Creedence Clearwater Revival). at times his guitar work (which is outstanding) sounds much like Carlos Santana (this is a big compliment to both artists). This album is keyboard dominated with great guitar licks adding dimension and depth. This album is a classic in it's own time and one that all should give a listen.
