Five Stars
This is one of my favorite Carpenters songs of all-time. It's a slight bit unusual for the Carpenters and would fit well on the album "Passage".
The song was written and originally recorded by Jackie DeShannon in 1976. The song of course contains the standard - yet very effective Tony Peluso guitar work. Also in this song is heavy use of electric vibes, which gives the song the shimmering chiming sounds throughout. The vocals are layered throughout giving even more of a sunny day effect. I love the lyrics in this song - makes you feel like you're on the beach.
I consider this to be one of the Carpenters' most creative songs in their entire repertoire. It is my favorite from "A Kind Of Hush"

What I love about this song is the fact that Karen really attempts and does a wonderful job as a vocalist, letting her voice wrap around a different style of music. Listening to it, makes you appreciate her vocals and the skill she has. Just when you think you have heard all different styles from her, she goes and shows you some new things. Vocally speaking, of course.

I've always loved the "motion" of this song. Musically, it's simply hypnotic, and I get carried away to wherever one goes when a song takes you where a good song should take you. Karen's voice melts into the lyrics, dipping a little this way and then a little that way ~ it's such a beautiful fit for her. I've always loved the original by Jackie DeShannon, but Richard's arrangement is subtle and delicate, - and to my ears, frames this song so perfectly. LOVE IT! Magiclamp

Vocally speaking, of course. Cam Hi Cam, YES!!! You said it so well. I also heard something "new" in Karen's vocal on this track, a certain quality that jumps out [especially when you're listening with headphone/earplugs] that I don't think I've EVER heard in her voice on other songs that are in the same register. I'll have to go back and listen again to be more specific, but when I was coming home on the bus today, I was shocked at how after hearing this song I- don't-even-know-how-many-times over the years, I discovered something new in Karen's voice. It just made me smile, thinking -- she had SOOO many shades/colors left to be explored. Wow, what a great vocal!!! Thanks for letting me share, magiclamp

I agree that 'Boat To Sail' is a top-class recording. It's so dreamy and sedate. Karen once again demonstrates her tremendous versatility, and boy, that intimate, breathy sigh of hers - 'ughhhhh' near the end - a delicious touch. 4 stars.

4 stars A very different "sound" for the Carpenters. Evokes a very fun, California kind of mood. When I heard Sailing on the Tide, I felt they were a match. Great song!
