Tough competition, but the message in E. J.'s 'Your Song' puts this song as my choice.

I liked "So Far Away" up until "Killing Me Softly" came into the ring so now I have to choose "Killing Me Softly" as my choice.
Roberta Flack did it best for me. I also have Vikki Carr's version which I like too.

I like all these choices, but I choose Elton's Your Song...it's a beautiful song and the way he sings it is just tops with me.

Urgh... I can't decide.
B.J.'s song was the first I eliminated, then Carole King. But left are Elton John and Roberta Flack - I love both tremendously. I guess I will have to give each a listen and come back with my choice.

Me neither . This is hard. I am going to have to stop by tommorrow, or draw straws?! I do not know. Lovely games you think up, Mr. Henry .

I took a listen to both songs. "Killing me Softly" sounded fantastic. Roberta Flack's vocal performance is out of this world and I really enjoy the soulful and easy going rhythm of the song - but my vote ends up going to Elton John's "Your Song". For as much as I love "Killing Me Softly" I love "Your Song" just a tad bit more. It's the lyrics. I can really relate to the words of love and friendship - "Your Song" is a such a meaningful and beautiful song. Much like the Carpenters' "Sometimes" - "Your Song" is a song which can easily be dedicated to friends, family and loved ones to pledge your love and commitment to them.
Your Song It's a little bit funny this feeling inside I'm not one of those who can easily hide I don't have much money but boy if I did I'd buy a big house where we both could live
If I was a sculptor, but then again, no Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show I know it's not much but it's the best I can do My gift is my song and this one's for you
And you can tell everybody this is your song It may be quite simple but now that it's done I hope you don't mind I hope you don't mind that I put down in words How wonderful life is while you're in the world
I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song It's for people like you that keep it turned on
So excuse me forgetting but these things I do You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue Anyway the thing is what I really mean Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

Well stated, Rick. I agree with your comparison to the Carpenters 'Sometimes'. It's the message that puts this song in a special category... How wonderful life is while you're in the world!

Thanks for printing the lyrics to "Your Song." A great song, no argument. (I'm sure that every entry into these games is great- I'm not looking for "Monster Mash" ((not that it's a bad song)) any time soon.) But as for this round, my heart is still with "So Far Away."

Thank you to all who have played this game so far. But once again we are stuck at a tie. If you haven't played yet - please do - click in with your vote at the top in the poll. It will take only one vote to break the tie - and we can move on.

I enjoy flute coda and the way the sentiment is expressed in Carole King's "So Far Away," but for me the decision is really down to Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" and Elton John's "Your Song." I like the unusual lyrical perspective on "Killing Me Softly" but there are many other songs of Roberta's that I like even better ("First Time Ever I Saw You Face", "Where is the Love", "The Closer I Get to You", etc). Elton's "Your Song" is a humble beginning for the star known also for more flamboyant hits ("Bennie and the Jets", "Saturday Night's Alright [for Fighting]") as well as more sober tunes ("Daniel", "Goodbye to Yellow Brick Road", "Rocket Man"). Ultimately "Your Song" seems to convey a more universal feeling, so my vote goes to it.
