Here we are with Round Four in Game Two.
This competition is between "Without You" by Nilsson and "Heart Of Gold" by Neil Young.
Which one is your favorite?
"Without You" by Nilsson - this song reached #1 and stayed there for four weeks from February 19 to March 11 in 1972. The song was certified GOLD for selling over a million copies. The song also won a Grammy Award for Best Pop vocal Performance by a male Artist. Gary Wright ("Dream Weaver" and "Our Love Is Alive") played piano on this song.
"Heart Of Gold" by Neil Young - Reached #1 for one week on March 18, 1972 (this one knocked "Without You" out of the top spot). It was also certified GOLD for selling more than a million copies. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor provided the backing vocals.

Really tough one here as I do love both songs but I chose Nilsson's Without You this is such a good song and one of the few songs in which I like all the cover versions by the various artists over the years that I have heard. I still think Nilssons is the best one though and just barely edged out a great Neil Young song Heart Of Gold.

I also love both songs tremendously. Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold" is a wonderfully heartwrenching song - and it definitely deserved to reach #1. His entire album "Harvest" is outstanding - it's a bit dark - but really hits the mark. Neil Young also wrote one of my favorite Carpenters songs "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing".
My choice though in this poll is Nilsson's "Without You" - what a wonderful emotion packed song - Karen Carpenter could have done an outstanding rendition of it.
Enigma... have you heard Heart's recording of "Without You"? They did an outstanding recording.

My overall depth of knowledge and memory of 70's music as a whole isn't very strong, so (though I am very much enjoying the game and the educational element thereof) I am only voting when I have a strong reminiscence of one of the entries- and in this case I vote for "Heart Of Gold", which I can remember standing around the radio, listening to.

Very good O.E. - I remember singing along to "Heart Of Gold" whenever it would come on to the radio.
Let's keep this game going.

Rick, interesting background info on the other artists who were backup performers for these tunes!
I like Gary Wright's clear, crisp piano intro (somewhat reminiscent of the Carpenter's "Solitaire" intro now that I think of it) and Nilsson's passionate vocals that soar from tenderness to excruciating pain on "Without You."
