By taking a look at the first and last number one hits of the 70's you get an interesting view of the decade. The very first song to reach number one in the 70's was B.J. Thomas' classic "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head". The song entered the charts on November 1, 1969 and reached #1 on January 3, 1970 and remianed there for four weeks. The song is from the Academy Award winning movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". Burt Bacharach co-wrote this song with Hal David. Bacharach/David also wrote the Carpenters' "Close To You" which stayed at #1 for four weeks in the summer of 1970. The last song at #1 in the '70's is Rupert Holmes somewhat novelty song "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)". The song entered the charts on October 20, 1979 and hit #1 on December 22, 1979 and remained there for three weeks. Holmes reached the top ten one more time in February 1980 with an upbeat pop tune called "Him". He ended his run of three top 40 hits in the summer of 1980 with "Answering Machine". We suspect Holmes is now somewhere on a topical island sipping pina colada's.

I have heard Casey Kasem quoted as stating that "Please Don't Go" by KC and the Sunshine Band was the last #1 of the 70's. Hi Dave, I went back and checked my references just to make sure I didn't make a mistake in the information I've listed. And according to the Billboard music chart "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" was the last #1 of the 70's. It was #1 for the weeks of December 22 and December 29, 1979. "Please Don't Go" by KC reached #1 on January 5, 1980 (thus making it the first #1 of the 80's). One week later on January 12, Rupert Holmes' "Pina Colada Song" made it back to #1 for one more week. The interesting thing about "Please Don't Go" is that it debuted on the charts on August 25, 1979 and it took four months and two weeks to finally reach the top of the charts. That's a long time, most songs during that time period would take about two months to reach it's peak position.

Carpenters' first #1 was 1970's "Close To You" and last #1 was 1975's "PLease Mr. Postman".
