Chapter Four.
When Karen pulled into the driveway of her condo. It was three p.m. in the afternoon. Using her pass card she opened the gate. It took her only a moment to find her parking spot, turn off the car and then grab for the bags of clothes. As it was a Sunday the elevator was free for to whole ride up to the top floor so Karen didn’t see any of her neighbors at all. Once inside the apartment she set her new things on the couch and then stepped in the kitchen for a glass of iced tea. Taking the glass with her she picked up the phone and first ordered a pizza and then called her parents to tell them where she was and that she would be spending the night there.
“ Karen are you sure that is wise?” her mother asked.
“ Mother I’m fine. I have a pizza on the way and then I want to start getting ready for my date.” Karen rolled her eyes.
“ Well you be sure and call us if you need anything.”
“ Yes I will. Goodbye now.” Karen hung up the phone.
Now Karen set about the one task that she’d really came here for. Going from room to room she gathered up the little boxes of laxatives that she’d had hidden in her pillowcase, under the mattress, in the bottom drawer of her dresser, and behind the fruit bowl. Once she gathered up the boxes she threw them all in a garbage bag, walked to the disposal room and tossed them. That part of her life was over. She made a silent promise to never touch those things again.
Once back in her apartment Karen sat in her living room and began to unpack the clothes that she had bought at Sacks Fifth Avenue.
Karen chose the teal and white striped blouse and the matching skirt for her date with Nathan. She left the rest of the cloths in their bags. She would call her maid and have her things hung up in the morning.
She was refilling her glass when the door chime sounded. Karen checked the peep-hole and saw a delivery boy with her pizza in hand. She opened the door and allowed the boy to enter, while she retrieved her purse and took out her wallet.
“ How much do I owe you?”
“ Comes to twenty-one ninety two all together.”
Karen took out a ten and twenty and handed them to the boy as she took the box.
“ You can keep the change”
“ Wow… Thanks Miss Carpenter!” The boy smiled and left.
Using her foot to close the door Karen went to the kitchen and put the pizza on the counter and opened the box. The smell that greeted her nose made her mouth water. Karen opened the overhead cabinet and took out a plate. Just as she was taking a bite out of the first slice the phone rang.
“ Hello?” Karen said with her mouth half full.
“ Karen, its Nathan. I called over to your parent’s house and I was told you where at your condo. Are we still on for tonight?”
“ Of course. I had something that I had to do here and I had to drop off my new clothes for my up-coming trip.” Karen swallowed and found herself smiling at the sound of Nathan voice.
“ Do you want to meet at the restaurant or shall I pick you up?” Nathan asked.
“ There is no sense in taking two cars, do you have a pen and paper handy?” Karen asked and once Nathan found one and he’d taken her address down he told Karen that he’d be around to pick her up at six-thirty.
“ See you then Nathan.” Karen hung up the phone and glanced at her watch.
4:35. It read.
Karen took her plate in to the living room and sat on the sofa and retrieved her glass of iced tea. Taking a sip she pondered her choice of outfit for the evening. Cocking her head to one side she began to think that maybe the peach blouse and pant combo would be better. She could wear that and then use her pink shawl to wrap her hair. Her eyes glanced back the teal outfit that she’d chosen earlier.
“ Screw it. The teal is fine.” She thought to herself.
