Hitting the pop charts at #44 is the single Sweet Sweet Smile, written by Country singer Juice Newton. Karen had heard this song and thought it would be good to record, and Richard agreed. Sweet Sweet Smile also reached #6 on Billboard's Country music chart. It took a lot of people by shock to have a Carpenters single crack the Country Top 10 chart. It's a shame that they didn't release another country single, as on a lot of their albums there was at least a few country-tinged tunes.
I BELIEVE YOU is also released as a single and hits #68.
Karen and Richard head to Europe and are asked to appear on the famous Star Parade variety show there. While there, they meet the world famous ABBA, which delights them. Karen comes back to the States and while guesting on the Tonight Show, she sings THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, as well as the Superstar/Rainy Days and Mondays/Goodbye to Love medley. She also sings a portion of the song SING in Japanese delighting the audience. Karen's humor is very evident on this appearance.
Karen and Richard also perform at the MGM Grand.
CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT is released, with the recording sessions being taped in Summer of 1978. Delightful selection of songs...Ave Maria, Merry Christmas Darling(new lead vocals) and other gorgeous versions. This album would eventually go platinum. On the US charts it hits #145.
The Carpenters TV Special CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT is also aired by ABC and features the Carpenters band, an appearance by Mom and Dad Carpenter, Georgia Engle, Kristy McNichol, Peter Pitt and Gene Kelly. Karen looks lovely in a satin green outfit, and is the essence of Christmas. Richard looks nice in his satin green suit. The stunning moments are when Karen, Richard and Gene sing ADESTE FIDELES, and Karen and Richard sing the spine tingling AVE MARIA. Karen looks beautiful in a silk-like white gown and her hair done up, accompanied by Richard on piano, admist lit candles. Also, a beautiful duet of Karen and Georgia singing STILLE NACHT(Silent Night) in German. Of course, it would not be Christmas without Karen singing the wistful classic MERRY CHRISTMAS DARLING. Richard also sings a beautiful song about Christmas.
