Their album A SONG FOR YOU hits the Billboard Top 200 Album chart at #4 and goes gold and then platinum, and eventually multi-platinum. The following single is GOODBYE TO LOVE and one of the Carpenters most controversial singles ever. During the recording, Karen and Richard remembered a guitarist named Tony Peluso who had been with a group that opened for them previously, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and wanted Tony to play on this particular record penned by John Bettis and Richard Carpenter. Surprised he was at being remembered, and that one of the most famous female singer was calling him. So he came down and laid down a track...a fuzz guitar solo. Everyone was happy with this "Power Ballad" and the critics, when released as a single, were impressed. The fans however felt that their beloved, clean cut duo had sold out and gone rock! This shocked Richard. The single peaked at #7 on the Charts.
They guested on a TV special with Robert Young, and a group of children with guests Sandy Duncan and Arte Johnson. They were taken with this song on there from the famed children's series SESAME STREET, called Sing. So a few days afterwards, they went into the studio, recorded it, and it hit #3 and sold a million copies...another gold single. It seemed that everything they touched turned gold! They were stunningly successful.
Their 5 th album is released in 1973 and is aptly titled by Mom Carpenter, "NOW AND THEN." The "NOW" being some modern day songs, and the "THEN" being pop classics like Johnny Angel, Our Day Will Come and Deadman's Curve. It hits #2 on the US charts and goes gold and eventually multi-platinum.
YESTERDAY ONCE MORE the next single goes gold and hits #2 and is penned by Richard and John Bettis. This song is a beautiful song about going back into the past while listening to the radio playing your favorite songs, and reminiscing. Sung gorgeously by Karen.
TOP OF THE WORLD single is released and becomes their second #1 single and million gold seller.
Their greatest hits album simply called THE SINGLES 1969-1973 is their only #1 album to hit the top spot. It will eventually go to sell an astounding 7 million copies, and become one of the all time best selling albums of the 1970's.
