This selection is written by both Cam and Rick henry. Rick's parts are in italic letting.
In July of 1977, the Carpenters new single ALL YOU GET FROM LOVE IS A LOVE SONG is released and peaks at #35. It's a nice upbeat song.
PASSAGE the album is released, and it gets excellent reviews from critics from all genres of music. It features a diverse selection of songs from the jazz-fusion B'Wanna She No Home (which was written by Michael Franks) to the country-esque Two Sides. The ballad I Just Fall In Love Again to the political Don't Cry For Me Argentina(which recieved huge press attention to the fact that over a hundred people were recording the largest gathering for a rock single...and Karen's vocal is flawless).
"Passage" reaches #49 in the U.S. and is a big hit in the UK where it reaches #12 and in Japan it hits the top ten reaching #7.
The cover art for "Passage" is excellent featuring an artistic blending of colors and sports a new Carpenters logo which was used only on the cover of "Passage". With subsequent albums they reverted to their previous logo.
CALLING OCCUPANTS OF INTERPLANETARY CRAFT the new single is released and hits #32. In the UK "Calling Occupants..." surprises many by reaching #9. This is an otherworldly tribute to extraterrestrial lifeforms and is nominated for a Grammy Award for Richard Carpenter's arrangement. This was Richard's fifth Grammy nomination for his musical arrangements.
SPACE ENCOUNTERS, the ABC Television special is aired and does well in the ratings. John Davidson and tv actress Suzanne Somers are the guests. Karen sings the country tune Sweet Sweet Smile, as well as the countryish Goofus. Karen also sings Dancing in the Street, and records a disco-ish medley. She does a wonderful duet with John Davidson called Dance In The Old Fashioned Way, as well as a duet with Suzanne Somers, Man Smart, Woman Smarter.
During the summer, Karen and Richard go into the studio to begin recording some Christmas tunes.
During the Holiday season, CARPENTERS AT CHRISTMAS is aired on ABC and is a ratings hit. Karen sings the gorgeous HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS, SLEIGH RIDE, WHITE CHRISTMAS and CHRIST IS BORN among other songs. Karen and Richard's guests are Kristy McNichol and the Carpenters band as well as Harvey Korman. Karen and Kristy do a wonderful song and skit called Christmas Alphabet. Karen and Harvey do a skit about Scrooge which is funny. Harvey and Richard also do a song and dance number in a bowling alley, of all places! It's a nice special! And Karen with the puppets is sooo cute. Karen's dog is on that special...I can't remember if it is Lady or Mush(is that the name?)
