Karen completes the rest of her solo album. She brings it to A&M and they decide it's not up to par. Herb Alpert says."It didn't touch me the way a Carpenters album would." (Well it wasn't a Carpenters album but Karen's solo...). When A&M decides not to release it, Karen is devestated but hides her feelings about it. She sends out a memo that she and Richard are beginning a new album.
Their special MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC is aired on ABC and is well recieved. Guests include John Davidson and the talented First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. On this special, Karen does a gorgeous duet with Ella, and later on Ella will say she loved the production values of the Carpenters, and she made mention of Karen's haunting bell like voice. It was a huge compliment to Karen to be able to sing with Ella. John and Karen do a duet of You're Just In Love, and Karen sings the classic When I Fall In Love. Richard performs Dizzy Fingers on a variety of pianos. Karen and Richard perform together on the song I've Got Rhythm, with Richard at keyboard and Karen at the drums, excelling as she always does. Ending the television special is a beautiful medley of Sing, Make It Easy On Yourself, Knowing When To Leave, Someday and the lush We've Only Just Begun. "The best of the best" says Richard Carpenter in regards to all 5 tv specials they recorded for ABC during 1976-1980.
Karen meets and begins a whirlwide relationship-courtship with Tom Burris, and they soon become engaged with a wedding on August 31, 1980. This album is also featured in People magazine, and is considered the society wedding of the year. Karen's recording Because We Are In Love is featured at this wedding service, and they are wed by Robert Schuller.
Karen and Richard are also working on what will become the MADE IN AMERICA album. Unfortunately it will not be released until 1981.
