I generally don't listen to the radio... but when Christmas comes around I do tune in more - just for the thrill of hearing Carpenters on the radio. I will generally tune in to KEARTH101 or KOST fm. Neither are playing Christmas 24/7 yet... but have heard a few songs here and there. I believe KOST does start playing nothing but Christmas in a few weeks. I also do channel surfing in the car until I come across a Christmas tune... so I don't know the names of all the stations I will hear Christmas music on.
I've really been enjoying KUDL today. I've heard several favorite Christmas tunes - but no Carpenters yet. Though, I did hear Nat King Cole's "Christmas Song" - what a lovely tune - of course I much prefer Carpenters' recording.
KUDL is a great station. They play an interesting variety of Christmas music. Right now they're playing "Wizards Of Winter" by the Trasiberian Orchestra - excellent electronic guitar Christmas music - love it.
KUDL has used "Merry Christmas Darling" in their station break announcement.

Finally after about two hours of listening to KUDL I've heard the Carpenters and it was "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" - what a beauty. Karen really sings this one like no one else ever sang it. Definitely by far my favorite recording of this song.
Now they're playing the Eagles "Please Come Home For Christmas" - another great tune - I always thought this one goes along well in theme with "Merry Christmas Darling".

I spent several hours yesterday listening to Delilah on KUDL... great show... but did not hear Carpenters once... and I kept listening and listening. I did hear tons of Christmas music including the a great recording of "Please Come Home For Christmas" by Charles Brown (this is the same song which was popularized by the Eagles in the 70's). I also heard the Ronettes with a spritely version of "Frosty The Snowman" and Johnny Mathis doing "Sleigh Ride" - I really didn't care for Johnny's version of this song.

Hey Rick-
Did you send an e-mail to KUDL thanking them for playing Carpenters Christmas songs?
The DJ this morning started to comment on an e-mail they received from someone who runs a Carpenters online site, but then he miss layed the e-mail and never finished his thoughts.

Yes, I emailed KUDL to let them know how much I enjoyed their radio program and thanked them for playing such an excellent variety of music. I didn't thank them for playing Carpenters, as I've only heard them once since I started listening a few days ago - and I've listened several hours each time - I guess you and I must be listening at different times. I did request Carpenters and mentioned how I felt their music is uplifting and joyful.
By the way who was the DJ who made the comment?

It was the early morning DJ team of Dan And Darcie. Dan was talking about the e-mail.

As of 1321 (PT) 16 Nov., the count is: -Darling-18 -Have Yourself-15 -Christmas Song- 11 -Home For The Holidays-4 -Do You Hear-3 -I'll Be Home-1 -Waltz-1 -Sleigh Ride-1
My feeling would be to keep it a commercial radio log. Hearing Carpenters music at stores, etc., is great but constitutes a slightly different dynamic. However if there is a general feeling that retail music should be included (this would be evidenced by multiple posts to this effect), I will certainly go with the majority opinion. Thanks!

My thought is that hearing a song in a place like a mall or a Home Depot, restaurant should be counted. As the song is being played in a public place where mulitple people hear it. Thus bringing more public airplay for Carpenters.
Whenever you hear music in a public place like that it is called piped in music - it's not somebody's personal selection. This is programmed music (much like radio) and it's put on a continous loop and sold to different corporations. Thus when you hear something being played in a Home Depot - it's being played at all the HD's at the same time - that's a lot of people hearing the same song - probable even more than the radio itself.
I say this time of airplay should be counted.
I still haven't heard much Christmas music yet... but did manage to hear "Merry Christmas Darling" on my way to work.

I agree! In fact, unlike a radio broadcast where there is more uncertainty in the size of the audience at any given moment due to different people tuning in to different stations, with piped-in music, everybody can't help but be listening to the same stream of music at the same time, especially if it's in a large department store, supermarket, or shopping mall.
