Hi Everyone, I am listening to this song What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? and must admit, I have never been too much of a fan of this song, but now that the season is here, I am listening to it, and adore it. I love the laid back feel to this song. Almost as if it is several generations even before Karen sung this...like the 1940's. Karen's version is delicious. That's the feeling I get, in describing her vocal performance. Compelling. A true standard. Just a breathtaking performance...from start to finish.
My thoughts, Cameron

You know this may sound odd, but when I played "Christmas Portrait" and "Old Fashioned Christmas" I used to keep a few people in mind with songs from the album.
I worked for a public housing agency at the time and there were a couple of special people that I worked with and I used to imagine myself dedicating certain songs to them.
One of my friends (who is passed on now) loved her cocktails in the evening. Well, her song from me was "What are ya doin, New Year's Eve?". Then there was the boss's secretary whose last name was Darling so you can guess what her song was from me. Finally, one time I can remember going to a special Catholic service with my boss and one of the songs we had to sing was the other version of "Ave Maria". Well, I decided that her song would be Karen's version of course.
It's funny how we pick so many different songs and relate them to someone else. I've always done that.
How bout you???

^* This song has an old fashioned feel to it. It proves Karen would have been a natural in front of one of those glorious 1940's jazz age big bands.

This is a beautiful recording. It also showcases the immense control Karen had over her voice when, at the end, she holds the final note forever: "What are you doing New Year's, New Year's Eeeeeeeeeeeeve" And while she holds that note, the choir has time to hum the first line of "Auld Lang Syne." This song just gives me a nice warm feeling.
