Hi All,
I am just amazed at Karen's vocal quality. I like a lot of female singers of yesterday and today, but Karen's is the one that gets to me. Her voice is like honey. Syrupy and sweet. Vanilla. Creamy. Silky. It has a quality in it that attracts people to just listen. It really has a heavenly quality to it. So pure. But not fake. It stands out among everything...other singers can compare in comparison when compared to Karen. Take for example, I love Dionne Warwick's version of IN LOVE ALONG for RC's solo TIME. She does a marvelous, silky interpetation and it's gorgeous. So does Dusty Springfield's version of SOMETHING IN YOUR EYES. Another wonderful job! These women were talented! Although I never was a big fan of their music before or after, i will admit that they can sing. But when compared to Karen. Karen has that extra something. Maybe it is innocence! Purity! Or her vocal phrasing that made it HER song! Take TICKET TO RIDE. I am not a fan of the Beatles, and do not like their song but with Karen's version, she OWNS the song(in my humble opinion). It's thru that, that I am able to love her other BEATLE interpretations of NOWHERE MAN, PLEASE MR POSTMAN, BABY IT'S YOU, CAN'T BUY ME LOVE, HELP. I know how much they were influenced by the Beatles. Imagine an album called THE BEATLES sing The Carpenters...
Anyways, her voice did sound worldly at such a young age. That is why I love the 1970 CLOSE TO YOU album. Full of wonderful songs. Followed by the 1971 CARPENTERS album...also contained some gems...A Place To Hideaway, Superstar, One Love, Let Me Be The One, Sometimes, Rainy Days and Mondays, For All We Know( I could have done without Saturday...but it is still a catchy ditty...I wonder if there is a version of Karen singing it...). The next album I loved was A KIND OF HUSH in 1976...wonderful ballads. Her forte. Some people thought it a boring album, but I think she was really growing as an artist. Boat To Sail, the song is wonderful! Her interpretaion is out of this world...the stylings are jazz-like. I love the simple SANDY, and the sad, lilting, ONE MORE TIME. BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO is cute. I love that song! Of course I NEED TO BE IN LOVE is gorgeous! The Next album I love is 1983's VOICE OF THE HEART...wonderful songs and selections. I love TWO LIVES, NOW, LOOK TO YOUR DREAMS, ORDINARY FOOL, PRIME TIME LOVE...some really great songs and it just shows what she could have sung...where her career could have taken her to.
What I admire most about her voice, and it's a bond between us Carpenters fans, is that quality of that she is singing just for us. That quality that draws us to her. To listen. To reflect. Because we can relate to the pain she is going thru...she doesn't hide it at all! And if she does hide it, it is in a song, that sounds happy, but we can all see thru it...like SING...like she is forcing herself to believe, that we don't have to worry if it's not good enough for anyone to hear...to just sing, sing a song. Or YESTERDAY ONCE MORE...a very sad, wistful song. ONLY YESTERDAY becomes an upbeat song, but I think throughout that song, there is a tinge of sadness thru. SOLITAIRE is achingly painful but gorgeously sung by Karen. I feel it is one of her TOP 5 Performances along with her AVE MARIA interpretation. She could have sung anything...ANYTHING!! OH well. We did lose a star on earth, but Heaven gained a shining, singing star on February 4, 1983...
My jumbled thoughts,
