Here is the album certification...as of 1998, I believe...
Ticket To Ride: 0 Close To You: double platinum(2 million) Carpenters: quadruple platinum(4 million) A Song For You: triple platinum(3 million) Now and Then: double platinum(2 million) The Singles 1969-1973: septuple platinum(7 million) Horizon: platinum(1 million) A Kind of Hush:gold(500,000) Passage:0 Christmas Portrait: platinum(1 million) Made In America:0 Voice of the Heart: gold(500,000) An Old Fashioned Christmas: gold(500,000) Yesterday Once More: double platinum(2 million) Love Songs: gold(500,000)
Gold Singles(denotes 1 million in sales)
Close To You-gold We've Only Just Begun-gold For All We Know-gold Superstar-gold Rainy Days and Mondays-gold Hurting Each Other-gold Sing-gold Yesterday Once More-gold Top of the World-gold Please Mr. Postman-gold
Does anyone know other album certifications worldwide? By country? Because in Britain, an album that sells 300,000 is considered platinum...(hence their 1990 ONLY YESTERDAY album went triple platinum...900,000 plus copies sold. In Japan, their album 22 Greatest Hits of the Carpenters went and sold 3 million copies, so I am unsure what that certification would be... Also there are some confusing things...the RIAA...posting of the gold and platinum albums...I assume that is in just the USA. Not counting worldwide sales...because I believe Close To You album sold over 5 million worldwide. And so on...If anyone has more information of every single Carpenters album...and how much they sold, per country, and certification...
My thoughts, Cameron

As I am unertain about the sales I will not correct you too much but I do believe Close To You sold more than 2mill copies. In the US, Close To You sold more than the Singles 69-73 according to the fanclub and is their mostselling US album. I can never remember hearing that Old Fashioned... went gold as it is quite hard to come by on LP.
As for other countries, I know Now&Then and The Singles went gold in Denmark, much is listed in the Decade Book. only Yesterday compilation went gold in Norway(where you have to sell 20,000 cpies to achieve it, that`s how small the country is ;D)

Hi Christian, AN OLD FASHIONED CHRISTMAS would have had combined sales from its LP and Cassettes...to reach the magic 500,000 mark. CLOSE TO YOU was probably their most successful US studio album. THE SINGLES 1969-1973 is their top selling album of all time at 7,000,000 copies sold. That's a lot of copies! I am not sure if that 7 million is just in the US or in Worldwide Sales...

I was on the A&M Corner A SONG FOR YOU forum...and found out this bit of interesting tid bit. Voice of the Heart sold over 800,000 copies. Ticket To Ride album sold 400,000 copies. Made In America sold 400,000 copies. Passage sold 400,000 copies. Lovelines sold 300,000 and it says that the KAREN CARPENTER album was too embarrasing to show how much albums were sold...

I think the 7million copies for Singles is total, worldwide sales.
As for Karen Carpenter album, I can`t remember that they did much promo for it, nor did they release singles from it in most countries. which explains the low sales. I think Passage ws more embarrasing when it comes to sales at it didn`t even get into the Hot 100 chart in the US (peaked at no 145 I believe)
Only Yesterday compilation was the big release by the Carpenters here in Europe in the early 90`s and I believe it did very well in most countries.

Okay where do I start. "Passage" actually peaked at U.S. #49. The singles "Calling Occupants" and "Sweet weet Smile" gave it it's biggest push. By now "Passage" has most likely reached it's 500,000 mark. Next time the RIAA decides to certify Carpenters albums this one should be GOLD. The reasoning for poor sales was not the music on the album, because when this was released Carpenters fans were elated with the new sound. It's just at this point Carps were just not considered in the "in" by the general public.
By now "Singles 69-73" has sold more like 8 million copies and that is in the U.S. only. I'd estimate worldwide it has probably sold around 20 million copies, maybe more - it's one of the world best selling hits packages ever.
Sales for Karen's solo album yes are not the best, but it is still in the bins at music stores and it still sells, slowly yes, but it's still selling. give it time and it will be gold - maybe four or five years from now.
"Ticket To Ride" by now has also reached GOLD status, just waiting for the RIAA to catch up. Same with "Made In America".
"An Old Fashioned christmas" yes has been certified Gold and would probably be platinum if they kept it on the market. The next one due for certification is the double set "Christmas Collection".
The sales figures Cam listed in his first post are acurate and are for the U.S. only, each of these albums have sold a whole lot more worldwide. Probably triple what they've sold in the U.S. alone. Also by now most of the albums have gone up a notch in certifications, "Horizon" is close to 2 million, "A Song For You" if not at 4 mil is very close to it. The RIAA figures Cam listed are from 1998, that's five years ago and you know these albums have all moved at least another million units each or very close to it. RIAA needs to do some updating on certifications where The Carpenters are concerned. And once again these sales figures are for the U.S. alone.
Also the Carpenters certification for singles needs to be fixed because several like "Close To You" have sold in the platinum status, it's just that the platinum single was not introduced until 1976.

Hello, For the gold million selling single, CLOSE TO YOU, according to the liner notes of THE SINGLES 1969-1973, this single sold 1.8 million copies, as it would still need another 200,000 copies sold to become a platinum single...at 2,000,000 sold. Also, Only Yesterday single sold moderatley well...at about 600,000 copies sold, which when you think of it, that's a lot of 45's sold.
My thoughts, Cameron

Certifications have changed in the U.S. since the 90's. To have a gold single, you only need 500,000. The Platinum singles are ceritified at 1,000,000. The singles and album sales are now equal. A lot of artists have had their singles updated to reflect sales. Taking a recent look on billboard.com, I saw old singles by Madonna and even Tim McGraw to have gold certs.
Older artists like Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John, and the Carpenters, haven't (or can't) updated their singles sales, yet. The Carpenters' albums were recertified in the late 90's to reflect Cam's postings.

I read that the country duo, Brooks and Dunn, just past 25 million in sales. What surprises me is that the article stated that they are the number 2 selling duo of all time, only behind Simon and Garfunkle at 37 million units.
So where are the Carpenters? The math I do in my head puts them around 30 million units in the U.S. World wide sales for the Carpenters have passed 100 million, but the stats for the other duos only included U.S. sales. Does anyone know the official count in the U.S. for Karen and Richard? Does the 100 million units count the million they sold in singles, as well?

Hi Moe, this is very interesting. Obviously whoever wrote this article has their information incorrect. By the way who did write this article and where did it appear? From the RIAA certifications listed in this thread the Carpenters have sold 24.5 million albums ( mind you this is only the albums that have been certified, and these certifications, with the exception of "Love Songs" were done in 1998) If we update the sales for the certified albums only it's more like 26 million (that's a conservative guess). If you add the sales of "Passage", "Made In America", and "Ticket To Ride" you have close to 27.5 million. Then go and add sales to all the remaining discs; such as "Gold: 35th Anniversary", "Classics Vol. 2", "Lovelines", "Interpretations", and a truckload of others that brings the C's up to around 30.5 million. If that's the case than C's are the 2nd top selling duo in the U.S. of alltime. What I've noted is that a lot of critics and music reporters still ignore the Carpenters as existing. This is evident with the article you mentioned Moe. Just out of curiousity where did Hall & Oates figure in this article? I think they've sold near 20 million U.S. units.

This was mentioned on both country music sites I hit, cmt.com and countrystars.com. I caught a news item from one of the country TV networks a few months back that stated that Brooks and Dunn passed Hall & Oates and only the Carpenters and S & G had sold more. They recgonized the Carpenters then, with a little "ugh," a comment I emailed them about, but they never stated sales of the others they compared them.
I agree that they don't recognize or give the Carpenters the respect they deserve.

I noticed on Billboard.com that a lot more singles are being ceritifed gold and platinum. It looks like they are counting downloaded songs from the internet as sales, or in the certifying process anyway. I have never downloaded music from the internet, are there a lot of Carpenters' songs out there for people to hear?
