Karen had lost some weight and now was at 106 pounds. She had cut her hair, and dyed it bronze, which looked quite good. She decided to wear a suit jacket, a silk blouse underneath, and a long suede skirt, with suede boots. She wore a lot of dangly, and fashionable jewelry. She looked quite hip and with the latest styles. Richard wore a white suit, and he looked quite handsome, with his white boots. With Karen wearing a blue outfit, with some white, and Richard wearing a blue dress shirt; they looked well dressed. They both got a lot of media coverage in the way of photojournalists. With Karen being last year's Grammy Queen, everyone was saying that she wouldn't probably win anything, since she didn't release an album this past year.
The auditorium was packed with celebrities here and there, and with the general public in the balconies screaming out Karen and Richard Carpenter's names out loud. Karen waved back at them, as Richard stopped to talk to other musicians. This was the one night a year, when all the music world gathered to honor their own. Karen loved the chance to be able to visit to other artists that she admired. She hated when the media would, out of spite, or trying to get an extra gossip scoop, magnify minor musical rivalries between herself and other female singers.
Like this past year, there was a supposed rivalry between her and Olivia, and she had to laugh at that one. Like they wanted to scratch each other's eyes out, or something really silly. Or other singers, which wasn't funny at all.
The evening progressed and Karen sang MY BODY KEEPS CHANGING MY MIND and she got an excellent response from the audience. She won the Grammy, her second in a row of BEST POP/ROCK FEMALE PERFORMANCE for the song MY BODY KEEPS CHANGING MY MIND.
That single had been # 1 for 5 weeks and had sold 2.1 million copies, so it was no surprise that she won. Karen, trying to collect her thoughts, walked as calmly as she could up to the stage, where the podium was.
"Thank you very much. I am very honored. It means a lot to me that my peers would recognize this song as they have. Thanks again to A&M Records, Jerry Moss, Herb Alpert, all the musicians who worked hard with me on this song. I really loved this song a lot, I had so much fun recording this song, it was a dream…Thanks also to my wonderful fans. I love you!" she said, with a huge, beaming smile.
Even before their turn to sing, the Carpenters won a Grammy Award for BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE BY A DUO, GROUP OR CHORUS for their song IN LOVE ALONE. Richard led his sister Karen by the arm, as they walked onstage. The clapping was thunderous.
"Well, we did it again! Thanks to everyone who helped out with this song! John Bettis who co-wrote this lovely tune with me, specially for Karen. A lot of love went into making this song so special. Of course, thanks to Karen for her lovely singing. What would we do without her? Thanks also to A&M Records for their belief in us…after all these years," said Richard, turning to Karen, signalling her to say something.
"Thanks also to our parents Harold and Agnes Carpenter. Thanks to our fans as well! We are always so amazed that you have continued to stick together with us for all these years. Here's to another 10 years!" shouted Karen as they walked off the stage.
The applause was deafening, as always. It was time for their performance, and with their latest Grammy win, they gave the song all they got.
Karen stood facing the audience as Richard began to play the opening chords of IN LOVE ALONE.
I memorize the words I want to say I practice every move I'll make I play the scene like you were here and I feel every breath you take But all my plans just seem to melt away The moment you walk in the room I try to speak but words won't come till I'm alone again I'm leaving heart on the shelf Sleep is a place I only cry myself and dream by myself I'm not in love alone We put our two hearts together Just like I've always know Once we begin we're forever and I will never spend a long night without you again
Karen sang this song with such simplicity, and her voice growing from a whisper to a more stronger voice with such conviction. During the chorus, their 2 voices blended, firmly entwined with one another, that nothing could break that vocal bond. By the end of the song, Karen looked as if she had given herself wholly to this song, and that she had nothing more to give to it.
The audience again, stood on their feet and began to applaud furiously. Richard stood, as Karen moved towards him, they held hands and bowed simultaneously.
Richard won a Grammy award for BEST ARRANGEMENT ACCOMPANYING A VOCALIST for IN LOVE ALONE. Richard went up alone as Karen stood in her seat and applauded him wildly. She was so happy for him. He had never won a Grammy Award for his excellent arrangement before, so she knew that this specific award meant a lot to him.
Another surprise was in for Karen as she won another Grammy Award for SONG OF THE YEAR. She was totally flabbergasted, as their had been other nominees, who had had songs at # 1 for more than her 7 weeks in the pole position. One song had been # 1 for 11 weeks, and she surely didn't expect herself to win.
Richard and Karen won another Grammy for Best Producers for the song IN LOVE ALONE, and they were amazed at how their brand of classy pop was now being widely accepted by critics and the music industry. It had been an amazing night, one that they wouldn't forget for a long time.
Next morning, the Carpenters were named the King and Queen of the Grammy Awards, snagging all together 5 Grammy Awards. The Carpenters as a duo, had won 2, and with their previous 4 wins, they now had 6 Grammies in their collection. Richard Carpenter won his first Grammy ever, and Karen Carpenter had won 5 Grammy Awards for her solo career. Altogether, she won 11 Grammys, the most for any Female Pop Singer in Rock History.
After the Grammy Awards, Karen graced the PEOPLE magazine issue, with her brother Richard. SINGING BROTHER AND SISTER ON TOP OF THE WORLD.
