Chapter Nine
It was awesome to meet all their fans once again. There were many faces that they remembered from the 1970's. There were also a lot of fans that were new. No doubt, they had been raised on the classic sounds of the Carpenters by their parents. Every night was a different experience, and their was so much love felt around with everyone involved in the Carpenters tour. Every venue that they played at was sold out, city after city, state after state. It was unbelievable, and yet they were not too surprised. They had always known that their music would continue to sell years after other artists died out. Their music was one of longevity, and would remain so.
People magazine put the singing sibling Carpenters back on the cover, "Singing a new song, all over the world." That issue sold well. They appeared on the Tonight Show and sang their last hit single IN LOVE ALONE. That show went really well much to Karen's happiness.
She remembered that a year earlier she had been on this same show, and here she was a full year later, with success as Karen Carpenter and as The Carpenters. She wouldn't have it any other way. She just wanted everyone to be happy.
Karen had a hard time getting her weight back up. It was especially hard when she was touring, because of all the stress, delayed meals, discomfort with travelling, and just general nervousness. She was touched that fans would be so concerned, and ask what was wrong with her. Most of them did it in a gentle, understanding way. There were the occasional fans, who maybe were just not born with the gift of tactfulness. They just said what come from their mouth, and Karen tried not to be mad at them, like they would ask, "Why are you starving yourself?", "You are already a bone rack!" or "You look awful!" It would hurt her, but she tried not to take it personally.
They also sang at some State Fairs, and they loved these types of shows, where there was a feeling of love, happiness, joy and pure fun. Karen was a bit of a daredevil, and so she would try and entice the Carpenters entourage, that they should join her on this neat ride. Karen would smile her innocent girl smile and say, "C'mon guys! You gotta try this ride. It's so awesome! You'll have loads of fun!" She managed to get some of them on, and boy did she have fun hearing them scream and yell, during the terrifying ride. It went against her nature, but she loved to tease people, and see them laugh. She wasn't always so innocent, and that was the most fun part…convincing those that there was more to this girl than just being the girl next door. Or depending on who her latest male friend was, she would act all silly and get them to win her the biggest and best stuffed animal. They would do everything in their power to get her that plush animal. It made her laugh to see them over exert themselves, and all for the sake of male pride. Even if they spent over $20 plus dollars, they couldn't back down. She just loved to act like a dumb blonde.
By the time the tour ended in mid-October, they were bushed, and tired. They were to have another 2 weeks off, just of rest and relaxation. Than it was back to the Recording studio and ABC Television studios, to begin another Television special slated for Christmas. They would also be recording more Christmas selections, as a new Christmas album would be released on Thanksgiving weekend. They still had some extra selections from the year before. So it wouldn't be a big thing to go in and record some tracks.
Karen loved Christmas, and the essence of Christmas was Karen. Christmas brought her such a warm feeling, and inside her being she was like a little girl again, lost in the world of tinsel and mistletoe, of stockings and fireplaces, egg nog and cookies, turkey with cranberry sauce, presents with laughter, and love ever after. She just loved the feeling of good will toward all people. She wished that the world could treasure Christmas feelings of love and peace, every day of the year, and not just one day of the year.
She loved to buy gifts for all her family, friends, god children, associates and whomever else meant something to her. It was not about buying the biggest or best present, but about sharing our love with others, whatever the present. Karen loved to sign Christmas cards, and she never really got tired of it. She knew that others would be touched by her concern and wanted them to feel good about themselves. Karen went out and bought tons of Christmas decorations for her condo. She was going to have one big Christmas celebration with all her celebrity friends, as well as non celebrity friends. She cherished both.
Florine came over to help her, string up ceiling decorations. They went out and bought 2 Christmas trees. Karen's motto, you could never have enough trees to decorate, and that was so true. Karen went to her storage room, and they began to drag out boxes and boxes of Christmas supplies that she would need. Many of the Christmas decorations that were given to her were by fans from all over the world.
She felt their love, especially at Christmas time, and sometimes when she was all alone, she would sit down and cry. It was too hard sometimes to be happy all the time, when she felt that her world was falling apart. Then she would dry her tears, and feel better. A good cry was good for the soul, she thought to herself. Of course, in the background, Christmas music would be playing. It would be extremely sac-religious to not have it on. Why it would be like a Carpenters concert without the Carpenters singing. Ha Ha Ha, Karen laughed to herself. She knew that her sense of humor was something to be desired. The only thing was that, no one seemed to desire her brand of humor.
She always loved to make people laugh. To revel in their happiness, was something that all she could do at times. Agnes would be coming over later on to help with the set-up, but Karen wasn't upset. It would be good to see her mother, and for them to be talking again. Christmas seemed to bring out the best in both of them, and that didn't happen too often. Karen managed to get her weight up to 101 pounds just in time for the holidays.
