She and Richard had planned to start their U.S. tour at the beginning of August and last until October. 3 months of grueling touring was going to wear them out, but it couldn't be put off any longer. Their fans had waited a long time.
By the time, Karen had arrived back in L.A., she was in deep trouble. She had lost 15 pounds and now weighed 99 pounds. Another problem in the Carpenter family, and Agnes was not too thrilled with Karen's newfound success. She considered Karen's going solo to be a treasonous act, and that she felt that Karen was putting on too many airs, giving interviews to this person and that. What about Richard? Did he not mean anything anymore? Karen was on the verge of tears again.
It happened night after night, while in New York. Her Mom would call and berate Karen about her solo album, and about the fact that she hadn't signed the divorce papers with Tom yet. After these calls, Karen would curl up on the floor and cry. So she wouldn't eat. She didn't see the need. Why couldn't her family just love her for the way she was? What was she doing wrong?
Agnes, upon greeting Karen at the L.A.X airport, just took one look at Karen, and in an instant, Karen knew what her Mom was trying to say. Karen felt awful, and just wanted to curl up and die. For the look seemed to be one of utter contempt. Karen knew that she didn't look too great, and Karen knew that what she saw in the mirror, was the result of a chemical imbalance in her brain. So when she saw a fat girl there, she knew that it was in her mind. The reality, was that there was a girl starving for affection, trying to please everyone in the world, but herself. Her feelings didn't count for much at all, if anything.
The next couple of weeks were spent with lots of rehearsals, recording, photo shoots for the promotional tours, and wardrobe fittings. Karen detested the wardrobe fittings because she was losing weight at an accelerated pace. She was now down to 94 pounds. Her hip bones were starting to stick out, and it made Richard angry to see how awful she was becoming. He would tell her that she was thin as hell, and he would yell at her, and she wished that she could just tell him to…well, she couldn't do that. Not to her own brother. She needed to be more patient with him. He had a right to be angry. It was her fault, as always.
The National Enquirer and Star tabloid magazines were now reporting how Karen Carpenter was wasting away, and that she was at death's door. They were now crucifying her. It always tore her heart, and brought her to tears whenever she saw another "friend" who sold her out, and that "friend" would receive tons of money to sell their story, on Karen's bizarre disorder. All for the sake of money. That was why she sometimes had a hard time trusting people, and she would end up the big fool.
The outfits that were designed for her were gorgeous. One was a slim, fitting white dress, with lacey sleeves, and a sweetheart neckline. Very simple, yet elegant. Another dress was floor length and was the color blue. It had short sleeves, and had a vest over top of the shirt. The vest and skirt material was made of satin. The dress had little sparkles sewn all over, and glistened whenever she moved.
Another outfit was a suit, with a pulled in waist. The pants were loose-fitting, but put no emphasis on her hip bones, as the suit jacket covered it. Underneath she wore a frilly blouse. One dress was red and had no shoulder straps. It had a tight bodice, which was held into place, and the skirt flared out, and went just above her knees…very racy, but classy. A small jacket of matching material and color could be worn with it. Karen had a pair of matching boots that went with the ensemble.
