The evening passed, and the Carpenters lost out to other artists, but nothing could dampen their spirits. They were literally on top of the world. Finally it was Karen's turn to perform. She seated herself at a stool, and held onto the microphone, as the music began to play. She was singing her song MAKING LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON, and Peter Cetera was seated opposite her, singing along with her. She could feel the magic, the electric current between them. The song came so easily to her, and when it was done, she received a standing ovation. She bowed, and realized that all these people were applauding her. They liked her solo album. That meant so much to her.
The evening continued on, and Karen just about died, when it was announced that she won BEST POP/ROCK FEMALE PERFORMANCE for her song MAKING LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON. "This must be my night!" she exclaimed with happiness and shock, "Thank you to A&M Records for releasing this album. Many, many thanks goes to Phil Ramone, who produced this album for me. It was a labor of love for all of us involved. Thanks goes to Karen Ramone, my friend, who assisted me…also to my brother Richard. I dedicated this album to him, and without you, I am nothing!" Karen said, while she began to cry tears of joy. Another standing ovation.
By the time, the star-studded gala event ended, Karen walked away with ALBUM OF THE YEAR and SONG OF THE YEAR. She had won 4 Grammy Awards. She, Karen Anne Carpenter had done it! She was so happy. Someone believed in her.
Karen was interviewed for "People" magazine and the cover read "Pop Music's Newest Grammy Queen Karen Carpenter!" She read bits and pieces of the article, while in the midst of eating her breakfast, and drinking coffee.
Karen Carpenter is the newest and hottest female singer on the Pop Charts. Her record, her first solo album KAREN CARPENTER, was certified quadruple platinum and is on the verge of selling over 5 million copies. It is indeed a success, and even surpasses any of her Carpenters' albums, which were big sellers during the 1970's.
Worldwide, this solo album of Karen has hit the 15 million mark, where in addition to being # 1 in Japan and England, it has hit the top spot in Spain, Australia, Canada, Brazil and South Africa, among others. She has had 2 smash singles from that album entitled REMEMBER WHEN LOVIN TOOK ALL NIGHT and MAKING LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON. Both singles hit the # 1 spot on Billboard's TOP 100 Singles.
Both songs show Karen's vocal diversity and how she was able to sing any kind of tune and give it an added sparkle. Both of these singles went gold, and were # 1 Adult Contemporary hits, as well.
She rejoined her brother Richard and the 12th Carpenters' album TOGETHER AGAIN went platinum, and their 2nd Christmas holiday album MERRY CHRISTMAS WITH LOVE also went platinum. They added another 3 Top 20 Singles to their collection of 17 Top 20 singles bringing the total to 20 Top 20 Singles, with another 2 Top 10 Singles being added to their record breaking 12 Top 10 Singles, to now 14 Top 10 Singles.
Karen also recorded another hit single for the movie IN MY HEART and the single shot to # 1 and sold over a million copies. This is her 3rd time recording a song for a movie soundtrack. In the 1970's from the motion picture LOVERS AND OTHER STRANGERS, came the hit single FOR ALL WE KNOW which won the Academy Award for BEST SONG of 1970. The next year, in 1971, they were nominated for another Academy Award for BEST SONG for BLESS THE BEASTS AND THE CHILDREN from the same movie of the same name. Unfortunately they did not claim the Award.
The IN MY HEART single is nominated for an Academy Award in just a few weeks time.
Karen still lives at her vast condo at 2222 Avenue of the Stars in Century City, and is still estranged from her husband Thomas J. Burris, the real-estate magnate, she married in a lavish Hollywood-style wedding with 10 bridesmaids. She won't comment on their situation, except to say, "We just grew apart. We both tried. We both still love each other, and maybe…" at this she trails off. When asked about if there will be a chance of reconciliation, she sadly shrugs her shoulders and turns away, a sad look in her big, brown, beautiful eyes.
While reading this part, Karen blushes. What will people think of her? Would they think she was another typical Hollywood celebrity? She was extremely flattered, by all the attention, and she was also glad for all the attention that she could focus on the newest Carpenters album, their 14th. It was now titled, "IN MY DREAMS." The article also told fans about Karen's battle against anorexia nervosa, and how Karen was close to death, but was brought back to life. There were some nice photos of Richard and Karen, Karen and Olivia in Mexico, Karen holding an armful of Grammy Awards. There was also a shocking picture of Karen weighing only 80-some pounds, which she detested. She wondered why "People" would put this in their magazine. Why did they have to know every detail of her horrible battle with eating disorders? Every television show had a star that battled an eating disorder, for that weekly episode. Dana Plato from Different Strokes, and Connie Selleca from Hotel and so on…She continued reading on…
Karen Carpenter now weighs a healthy 114 pounds for her petite 5 ft 4 ½ inch frame. Just about 16 months ago, Karen weighed an emaciated 77 pounds. "It was awful," she says with a sigh, "I wanted to be so thin. I felt that if I was thinner, everyone would love me even more." Why did she get that way? Didn't she feel loved? She was a world famous superstar with millions of fans. How did she get better?
"It's kind of hard to explain, but even with all the attention, I still felt so alone. I needed something that would take away my pain. And so I kept on dieting, and limiting my calories on a daily basis, and it was hard, but gradually the pounds began to drop off. That was in 1975, when we had to cancel the European and Japanese world tours, which I didn't want to do, but I was severely underweight. Of course, my parents and Richard, close friends couldn't understand my need to get even thinner…and that made me even more so want to lose weight. And so I did.
Until finally in 1981, around Christmas time, I knew that I needed help. I realized how sick I had become, and it was hard for me to function normally. So I moved to New York to see Dr. Steven Levenkron, on a daily basis, and by November 1982, I had managed to get up to 108 pounds. It was kind of scary, but I triumphed over anorexia nervosa, and I continued to maintain my weight, eating daily, and limiting my exercising.
Unfortunately, I collapsed on the morning of February 4th, 1983 and ended up in the hospital…I guess I had rushed into things to fast…so now, I take things a little slower…and try my best to be careful." Karen looks stunning now…She just got back from her vacation in Mexico with her good friend Olivia Newton-John.
Karen's hair is getting really long, and she has a glow about her. She looks radiant and happy. She looks like the picture of success… T
he article continued on, and there was talk of the new and upcoming album of the Carpenters, their 14th album release..
Another big event was the Prestigious Award Show of them all…THE ACADEMY AWARDS. Karen had been nominated for her song IN MY HEART, and her rendition of the biggest movie hit single of the year brought the house to their feet.
The love story comedy-drama in which Streep's character finds true happiness mirrored the song to a tee. So no one was more surprised when Karen took home the Academy Award for Best Song of 1983. Actually Diane Warren took it home, but Karen would be remembered for the song.
She also won an American Music Award for "Best Pop Female Singer" as she hadn't won an award since 1974 when she and Richard captured "Best Pop Group." She was very pleased as this showed how her image was slowly changing, and she would be known as Karen Carpenter, solo singer, and not just Karen Carpenter of the Carpenters.
