Chapter Seven
The most exciting event on their agenda was the Grammy Award Show. Richard chose a simple, black tux with a red and white bow tie. Karen wore a black, slinky gown, with a slit from her upper mid-thigh down to her ankles. Red and white material was woven into the left side of her chest down to where the material parted, showcasing Karen's shapely legs. She wore red sexy high-heeled shoes and matching red sapphire earrings, with a sapphire choker around her neck, with a white band encircling her slim neck. Her hair was swept up in a french twist, and she looked absolutely stunning.
When they entered, Karen was definitely the star of the Grammys. No one looked as she did. The click of the photographers was always clicking whenever Karen turned this way or that.
Karen loved the Grammys, and loved to be able to mingle with other musicians. This was the Academy Awards of the music world. Everywhere she looked, she could see other musicians she admired and looked up to.
The program began, and Karen was a bit nervous. She hoped that people wouldn't put too high expectations on her, becoming the New Grammy Queen. For all she knew, she would walk away empty-handed. She just hoped that maybe she and Richard could win a Grammy. It would heal any rift between them, if there was any.
Finally it was Richard's and her turn to go up on stage. She seated herself at the one end of the piano, while Richard seated himself at the keys. He began to play, and the gorgeous medley began. CLOSE TO YOU/SUPERSTAR/YESTERDAY ONCE MORE/WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN and ended with an acapella rendition of their last hit TOGETHER AGAIN. They were greeted with a standing ovation, and Karen and Richard rose, held hands and bowed.
Up next was their nomination for BEST CONTEMPORARY POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE BY A DUO, GROUP, OR CHORUS. They were in a league of other successful singers, and no one was more surprised when the winners were the Carpenters for their performance TOGETHER AGAIN. They were elated, as they moved toward the center podium.
"Wow! I can't believe it! Gosh! Another Grammy to our collection. Two hicks from Downey…who would have thought?" gasped Karen in disbelief. As she accepted the award BEST CONTEMPORARY POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE BY A DUO, GROUP, OR CHORUS for TOGETHER AGAIN (the single).
"Amazing!" said Richard with a huge smile, and trying to contain his thoughts, "Thank you to everyone at A&M Records…Herb Alpert, Jerry Moss, the studio guys, John Bettis who co-wrote this song with me. Mom and Dad! Thanks for your support and love!"
"Oh yeah! Thanks to our fans. We feel, and know that we have the best fans in the world! We couldn't have done it without you! We love all of you!" yelled Karen with such force and gusto, that everyone in the audience laughed at Karen.
They went backstage, where they were interviewed, photographed with their Grammy, and then it was time to present another award to other musicians.
