The show began to start, and Karen headed to the song stage, where she would be introduced. She saw Peter Cetera there, and gave him a smile, and a thumbs up. Karen also made a goofy face to him, which made Peter want to laugh, but couldn't. They were live, of course, so they couldn't make a sound.
Peter had always been a big fan of theirs, and he knew the demanding, grueling world of music, as he was from the very successful group CHICAGO. Karen still remembered the time when in the early 70's, when they had sent Karen and Richard many beautiful roses. Karen never forgot. Truthfully she thought that Peter was really cute, but to her dismay, she found out that he was taken. Oh well, there were other fish in the sea. The only thing was she didn't want a fish, she wanted a man. She almost laughed, and had to chide herself to not laugh out loud, as sometimes she was prone to giggling fits.
From where they were, they could hear everything quite clearly, the monologue, the laughter, Johnny's interaction with the audience, the commercials, and his first guest actress Suzanne Sommers. Suzanne and Karen were good friends from several years.
In 1977, Suzanne had guested on the Carpenters highly rated Space Encounters TV Special, and a fun time was had by all. Karen had loved to watch THREE'S COMPANY on tv, and she would laugh her heart out at it. She felt bad for Suzanne when Suzanne was fired. Now and again, they got together and visited, when their careers allowed it. She decided to plan a get together with her.
"And now, we have a special treat for you tonight. She was of the top brother and sister duo The Carpenters in the 1970's. Now making her solo debut…Ladies and Gentleman…Karen Carpenter, with guest star Peter Cetera…singing her newest single MAKING LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON!" said Johnny Carson with enthusiasm.
The curtains lifted, and the harsh and bright floodlights almost blinded them. Karen couldn't even see the audience, which maybe was just as well. The beat of the song began… "Making love in the afternoon, making love to another Beatle tune…and I know you're feeling the same way too. All alone on a sunny day, on our own when we had to get away…and I know that I couldn't ever live without you, don't ever leave me alone…"
Karen sang in a very playful tone, with Peter singing certain parts of the song. Finally the song was over, and the audience jumped to their feet, and began to whistle and applaud very loudly. Karen just beamed and she bowed, and then she turned to face the many musicians and clapped for them. The audience began to get louder, in appreciation for Karen's thoughtfullness towards the musicians.
She turned to see Johnny beckoning her over, and so she lifted some of her gown up, so she wouldn't trip over it. He gave her a kiss and a hug.
"That was very well done, Karen!" exclaimed Johnny Carson, "A beautiful song made more so, by an extremely heaven-sent voice. Amazing!"
"Well thank you for having me on your show. The audience is just fantastic!" breathed Karen, trying to get her breath back. At this the audience began to clap again. Karen laughed and tried to quiet them down, with a gesture.
"We're always glad to have you here Karen. You and your brother Richard have been on this show quite a few times, so it's almost like your second home, isn't it?" joked Johnny.
"If you say so, Johnny," Karen said looking at the audience, and laughing as she turned to look back at Johnny. The audience just hooted, as they saw Karen's funny facial features, and her features changed back to all innocent-like when she turned to face Johnny.
"So what are you doing back in New York?" asked Johnny, "I knew you had been here on and off for the last couple of years."
"Well, I am just completing my solo album. It was to have been released in 1980, but because of Richard's and mine's busy schedule, well…it just was shelved. Now, we've decided to release it. I have had so much fun working on it!" said a giddy Karen.
"So what is Richard doing? I am surprised he isn't here," inquired Johnny. "Well, he has so many other projects to do. We're finishing off our 12th Carpenters album, working on our 6th television special…actually that's still in planning stages, and getting ready for a worldwide tour of Japan, England, and other countries, which will take us into the new year of 1984," Karen gamely explained.
"So the song you just sang is your next single, and from your new solo album, right?" Johnny asked.
"The song that Peter, who is a guest vocalist and I sang is called MAKING LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON, and it will be my debut single from my solo album titled KAREN CARPENTER. The album will be in stores by July 4th , and I am just so excited!" bubbled Karen in enthusiasm, "I had such an awesome time recording it, and had a lovely time with all the wonderful people who helped me with it, especially my producer Phil Ramone."
"Everyone! Go to your nearest record store and purchase the lovely voiced songstress Karen Carpenter on July 4th. Thanks Karen for that lovely performance, and for guesting on my show!" said Johnny as he kissed Karen.
"Thank you Johnny!" said Karen, as she gave him a hug. The audience clapped, as they went to a commercial.
"How was that?" asked Karen, as Johnny stood up, to get more touch ups to his make-up. "Just fine, Karen. Will you come back again?" asked Johnny. "Sure," was her reply, as Karen walked towards her dressing room, holding on tightly to her gown.
Back in her dressing room, Karen just sank on the couch, just totally exhausted. And people wanted to be a celebrity like her? She didn't understand people sometime. All for the price of fame. If only they understood, how tiring and demanding it was to maintain the public's perception of you, why they might just not want to be in the world of show business. The public only saw one image of celebrities, the successful part. They didn't see the demanding work that was involved in maintaining your career, and all the publicity that went with it. The long hours, the constant smiling, the phoniness, and the fact of knowing that your life wasn't fully yours, but that the fans made you, and they could break you.
A knock at her door zapped her out of her almost sleeping mode, when she called out, "Come In!" In walked the beautiful and blonde, Suzanne Sommers. Karen quickly arose, and greeted her friend with a hug and a kiss.
"Loved the song Karen! Magnificent! I was happy to learn that you would be here tonight, honey. Do you have time to talk?" asked Suzanne.
"Of course Suzanne. How are you doing?" asked Karen, "Would you like something to drink, or can I get you anything?"
"Don't worry about me Karen. I'm fine. How about we go out and talk…let's say over dinner, how about it?" inquired Suzanne, who was wearing a teal leather outfit, and looked so incredibly sexy. Karen suddenly felt all her beauty and sexiness just fade away, when Suzanne stood next to her.
"Sure," said Karen, as she gathered up her belongings, and they left. They enjoyed a pleasant evening chatting about show business and the great demands placed upon them, to appear confident, on top of things, live like a star, spend money as if tomorrow would never come. They also talked of their own personal problems, and let down their guards down with one another. Both women loved to please others, and they were both very open with one another, a common personality trait.
