Johnny Carson heard that Karen was in town, and he wanted to book her, to sing one of her new solo songs. He had heard thru the grapevine, that Karen would soon be promoting the album, and wanted to get her exclusively before anyone else would. Karen liked Johnny and agreed. It would give her a chance to promote her album on a national network, as Johnny's late-night talk show was a solid hit after all these years. Since Karen hadn't been in the public musically for the last few years, this would get her back on track.
Karen arrived at the NBC studios, feeling quite nervous, and scared. At least when it had been her and Richard, they had been together, and they knew that they could do everything just fine. Now, she didn't feel the same way, because she was doing this alone. She was taking the plunge, and she felt so terrified, and so alone.
Was Richard, and the family going to watch the show? She had told them about it, and to say the least, they didn't seem too enthusiastic, or really supportive in any way. She wished now that she hadn't taken a break from their duo status. Maybe she had been wrong? The thoughts began to eat at her, until her stomach churned in anxiety.
She entered into her dressing room, and saw that since the early afternoon, when she had been here rehearsing her song, they were triple the flowers in her room. The room was filled with so many types of flowers from friends, well wishers, and fans. Jerry Weintraub, Werner Wolfen, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, Phil and Karen Ramone, Olivia Newton-John, Dorthy Hamill, Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Paul Williams, Johnny Carson, and the list went on and on. A Hollywood who's who. She was dissapointed to see none from her family. She put on a brave smile, calmed her nerves, and walked to the make-up room. Less than an hour before the show went live. She tried to breathe deeply and calmly.
She seated herself on one of the chairs, as this girl named Cherri came and began to introduce herself, and ask what Karen wanted. Karen wanted her hair cut shorter, the way it had looked for the 1980 photo sessions. Cherri began to wash Karen's hair, and than began to cut it, and style it. While Cherri was doing this, they chatted, and Karen got along well with the hairdresser, and was delighted to learn that she was a big admirer of the Carpenters. Karen then signed an autograph for her, which Cherri was delighted to receive. Then the make-up was applied.
After that was done, Karen headed to the wardrobe department, to check on her outfit. Certain alterations had been made, and Karen found that it was suitable. Back in her room, Karen slipped into the ruby red gown. It had spaghetti straps, and was very well form fitting from the waist up. The waist down, it flared out, with a white silk sash around the waist. Karen wore a white velvet choker around her neck. Pearl earrings that drooped down, finished the outfit. She slipped into satin red high heeled shoes. Karen took a glance in the floor to ceiling mirror, and was amazed at how well she looked. She looked quite stunning and very sexy. Her hairstyle, looked cute, and enhanced her face…everything about her oozed confidence. She glanced at the clock, and knew that just a few minutes away, she would be in the homes of millions of people. She would be singing for them. If only they could know how nervous she felt.
Karen walked down the hallway, and turned toward the studio, where the taping would be. She took a couple of deep breaths, and tried to steady herself. She would be singing the song MAKING LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON, and Peter Cetera would be guesting as well, dueting with her. They had practiced and practiced until that song was perfect. Karen's reputation as a perfectionist had followed her, one of the traits of being a Carpenter sibling.
People were all scurrying around her, like mice being chased from a cat. She saw Johnny Carson striding towards her, and gave her a smile, and said, "Don't you worry about a thing. You'll do just fine, I promise." He gave her a quick hug, and then he was off to the stage. People were buzzing around him, fixing his hair, cleaning his suit jacket, handing him cue cards, and telling him things to remember.
