Her Mom came in, and it was time for Karen and her to leave on their lunch date. She said goodbye to Evelyn and they left. They decided to take Karen's car to downtown Rodeo Drive, where Karen loved to shop. First they went to lunch, and Agnes looked on with happiness to see her daughter eat something, she considered substantial.
They chatted about other family members, which Auntie and what Uncle were doing this and that. It was neat to catch up on what various family members were doing. If anyone knew, it was Agnes. She had 3 other sisters, and in everyone's eyes, the Carpenters weren't considered too special. They were just one of their own, who happened to make it big, and who were very generous with everyone in their family.
The shopping began, and Karen tried on this and that. She tried on dress pants, skirts, shirts, sweaters, knit outfits, sweatshirts, jogging outfits, jeans, shoes, hats, evening gowns. She bought a lot, and put it on her credit card. She always shocked people when they found out she was "the" Karen Carpenter, and many didn't believe her. It amazed her. Her Mom always became delighted by this, and would bask in the attention of her daughter being recognized by fans.
They finally finished their shopping trip, and headed home. The traffic became quite hectic on the freeway, and Agnes was complaining of the smog that hung over the city. Karen had become, over the years, an experienced driver, who could carry her own. It terrified her mother to no avail, who didn't want her daughter dead of an accident on the freeway of all places. "Karen! Slow down! You don't want us both dead, do you?" asked her concerned Mother.
Within due time, they pulled up to their Newville driveway, and Karen could see that Richard was there, with one of his many cars. Richard bounded over to the car, and gave Karen a hug. She could see that he was relieved that everyone was on speaking terms again. He helped Karen and Agnes with the many bags of outfits that Karen had finally selected. Karen felt that she had spent a fortune on clothes. The bill came up to $3, 000.00, and it was a lot of money, but Karen and everyone else felt that she deserved it. At least she would wear new and stylish clothes. All of her size 0, size 2, and size 4 clothing would be packed away. She wouldn't be able to fit into them, as she now was more formed at 110 pounds. Karen even felt quite proud at how she looked. Maybe she could stay at 110. She was so sick of starving. It made everyone mad, but she also realized at how she was the one in control, when it came to her weight. No one could make her eat, if she didn't want to.
She went inside to her bedroom, and decided to put on a shimmery evening gown. She thought that she looked good in it, but her hips seemed to stick out, and that made her mad. She hated her wide hips, and she would do anything to hide it. That was a sore point with her. She fixed her long hair, and her hair was about the same length as was in 1977. She wore it in a bun, with hair wisping down in tiny strands. She adjusted her make-up a bit with the philosophy that less was more. She was never one of those who painted tons of make-up on their faces. That wasn't her style. Just enough to enhance her features. Of course, she never felt beautiful, but at least she would try her best. Many would tell her she was gorgeous and she would start to feel good about herself, and then the critics would tease her of her girl next door look, that she wasn't the type you would catch yourself taking a peek at. Who to believe?
She came down, and she felt silly as her whole family was waiting downstairs for her. She felt like Cinderella coming to the ball. "Oh Karen! You look lovely!" gasped Agnes in disbelief. Richard just whistled, but that meant a lot. Her Dad just stood there with his hands in his pocket, and he was smiling a closed smile. He didn't need to say anything. She knew what he was thinking.
As she came down the stairs, Karen got all teary-eyed. She loved her family so much. They all left, with Richard driving his Mustang convertible.
The evening did end, but Karen felt like Eliza Doolittle in the movie MY FAIR LADY, when Eliza sang I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT. It all seemed to be a dream, as if she would never wake up. Her parents seemed to have a good time, and they bumped into other celebrities, who congratulated Karen.
Several photographers came up to her and took pictures. The food was great, as usual, and she and Richard even danced. The most pleasant of all, was when the band convinced Karen and Richard to come up and sing a song for the audience. They didn't want to, but with an encouraging nod from her parents, they finally agreed to sing their last hit single TOUCH ME WHEN WE'RE DANCING. Everyone clapped wildly and shouts of encores were heard all around. They came down to where their parents were, who encouraged them to sing another encore. So Richard and Karen walked back up, and told them what song to play next. Richard seated himself at the keyboards, and Karen grabbed the mike. From the opening strains, WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN was played, and Karen's velvety vocals grabbed everyone's full attention. Richard sang background vocals, and their sound was music to everyone's ears. After they were done, the crowd went wild. Modestly, Karen and Richard clapped for the band, and said that it was the band's night, and walked off the stage.
Karen decided to stay over for the night at her parent's home, because her energy level wasn't where it should be. Plus, it was too late to drive home alone to her condominium. She knew her parents would be very pleased, and it didn't hurt to stay over. She headed straight to bed, and promptly fell asleep.
