Howdy, My name is Mary and I just joined this site. I love, love, love The Carpenters and am glad to be here. I play the drums, but cannot sing for beans. The only reason I was allowed to take up the drums was because my parents were like: "Well, Karen Carpenter played them, so I guess it would be alright." My late mother had a mad 45 collection, man. She had some great music. And, the first Carpenter song I ever heard was "Sing." That was back when I was, maybe, five years old! My parents were a full generation older than my friend's parents when I was growing up, and so I got exposed to some fine music. Well, I just truly love the Carpenters and am very happy to have found this site. ;D

Welcome Mary, It is great to have you with us. I always enjoy references to "Sing", my very favorite of the dozens of great Carpenter songs. Thanks for the lyrics to the great inspirational song "Ave Maria." We look forward to conversing with you in the various posts.

We were just recently mentioning in another discussion thread how female drummers are still relatively rare, although perhaps to a lesser degree nowadays, so it's great to have one among us. Just curious — what drumming styles do you like to do best and have you done much performing with a group or groups? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well Hello, Good Old Dreams:
Yeah, I would dare say that lady drummers are still mighty rare. In my humble opinion, there is Karen Carpenter and Shelia E., you know? Those are the two most popular and well known lady drummers. Meg White is a fair drummer, but she kinda keeps a child like beat to the music. However, that works perfectly within the kind of music The White Stripes do.
The only thing I have in common with Karen Carpenter is that fact that we both like Buddy Rich. I love Buddy Rich a great deal, and have loved him since I was a small gal. He was great. And, I recommend everyone going on the youtube and looking at this neat video of the Carpenters in Belgium playing Mr. Gruder. In that video, you can see Karen Carpenter sing and play the drums totally live and get a very good sense of the influence the work of Buddy Rich had in her percussion. The youtube is free and all, so I figure it is alright to mention?! I am sorry if it is not.
I have a sound proof garage at my house. And I have my drums set up in there. It is soundproofed in a humble way. I do not do anything professional seeming with percussion at this time at all, and have not for quite a while because the more jazz orientated things are not popular in my city. It is cool, though.

Hi Mary...
Thanks for the info on yourself. It's always interesting to learn more about the people who frequent this forum.
I agree as far as female drummers go - there is Karen Carpenter and there's Sheila E.
I do have a White Stripes CD and Meg White's percussive work is good - but really not quite as fine and intricate as Karen's work. You should listen closely to Karen's fine work on "This Masquerade" - totally awesome. Another excellent song is "All I Can Do" from the "Ticket To Ride" CD.
Another well known female drummer is Maureen (Moe) Tucker who was the drummer for Velvet Underground - she was pretty good - but in my mind nowhere close to the precision of Karen Carpenter.
