Hi Billy! Welcome! It is wonderful to have you here on the Carpenters Online. It's great to see someone only sixteen years old loves the Carpenters. I was 16 in 1976 when "There's A Kind Of Hush" was a big hit.

Hello Billy,
Welcome to this group!
I became interested in the Carpenters' music when I was about 12 years old living in California because "Close to You" reminded me of some of the Chinese contemporary vocal music I heard on the radio growing up in Hong Kong. How did you first "discover" the Carpenters' music? It will be interesting for us to learn from your perspective!

Hello _ I am George, a major fan of Carpenters since 1970, and actually member of Newville Ave mailing list from about 1995 until its demise!
The photograph top left of Karen is one I have not seen before. She looked unwell there, and is that a towel under her arm? When was this photo taken. Don't remove it because it strikes me as a possible shot of the very private Karen - distressing but possibly real.

It's good to know another major fan right from 1970! I was a frequent visitor to the Newville Avenue website also before its demise. I hope you will join our discussions here and share your thoughts and experiences with the Carpenters, your favorite songs, any concerts of theirs you may have attended, etc. It looks like the photograph of Karen is a screen capture from the 1976 "There's a Kind of Hush" music video. Karen was wearing a loosely-fitted garment that was gathered at the waist above wide, flared pant leggings that looked somewhat like a gown at first glance from a distance. Being the anorectic person she was, Karen may have not have recognized how painfully thin she actually looked to others, and Richard often had to coax her to put on a jacket so that the audience would not gasp at her appearance during their concerts.

Hi there George, and welcome to Richard and Karen Carpenter Ave....or "the avenue" for short. I'm happy to have another 70's Carpenters fan too - like Good Old Dreams, I first heard the Carpenters, and fell in love with that sound right from the start, as Close To You hit the airwaves. We have some really wonderful discussions here, play a few games, and we enjoy and respect each other, even when our opinions differ. It's a great site, run by a great guy. Happy to help you find something, or point you in the right direction here, if you wish. Please don't hesitate to ask. It will be super to hear your adventures, your opinions, and your favorite stories. I didn't find the Newville Avenue group until just before you all met together in Downey at the Newville house. However, I did get to know Randy Schmidt, who actually gave me exact driving directions some years later to not only the Newville House, but the Methodist Church, the apartments, and the Lubbec house, as well. Randy is a good guy. So, welcome, welcome, welcome. Tim (AKA YesterdayOnceMore)...... PS - to all those forum members who know the story - I was a bit amazed to find a post by our Honorary Member, Jim, here. I loved what he had to say: "....I knew I was home....." Boy, howdy!
