javascript:adds(%22;)%22)Hi, I just registered. Needless to say, always been a huge fan since age 13. When I became a fan their carrier went down and somehow it wasn't 'cool' to love softrock. So, I kept staying on denial. The next big news was her death! I am very saddened about not having seen them live. I would like to know about them as much as possible! My questions may sound banal,javascript:adds(%22???%22) but please bear with me, the newcomer, born in Japan and raised in Germany. Thanks.javascript:adds(%22:-*%22)

HI FOOCHAN. I can relate to the denial thing. almost throughout the entire 80's I was a closet fan. Now the Carpenters are accepted. A lot of people even consider Karen to be "cool".

Hi Foochan, I'm also interested to hear what Carpenter Songs were popular in Germany! Please tell! On the subject of Carpenters not being "cool" -- well, that seems to have been an issue for alot of people -- but I was very uncool to begin with, so nobody cared what I listened to -- I was an artists and not very good at the teen social scene, never cared about the prom, and although back then I was a "sqaure peg" that would have LIKED to be "cool", I am very glad I didn't stop doing what I wanted to do -- wether it was in the closet or on the fringe in the open -- HURRAY for us -- because, in the end , doing what you love- regardless of what's POPular- ; is COOL! ;D

We moved to Germany back in 1971 and I was too little to remember what was going on there pop-musicwise. I played the violin and a little piano, and my parents always wanted me to listen to pop in order to loosen up. They tried with Pat Boone, Beatles, Burt Bacharach (!), Charles Aznavour etc. but failed. I remained strictly a Bach-fanatic till one day we were on vacation in the mountains in Japan, it was Summer 1976 and there was that shalalala song on the radio, and that was it. My parents were so happy the first thing they did was buying me their album, and to my surprise it was a sister/brother duo, and I liked them even more. Unfortunaly, they didn't have too many hits from that point. The songs I heard on-air though, were: Calling Occupants, Sweet Sweet Smile, All You Get..., Beachwick. Also, they were on Starparade with ABBA. Anyway, in 1978, I started hanging around with rocker-friends, so I became just a closet-fan to stay safe. I really had some issues myself. Because when I started to become a musician, it didn't matter anymore what 'seemed' cool. A German studio-drummer claimed Karen Carpenter to be his favorite drummer, so here we go!

to perform are: almost any kind of music. I have been touring with several bands from pop, jazz, funk, r&b, blues to country. Although I realized there is a slight difference between what I like to perform and what I like to listen to in my spare-time. In those top 40 bands, we played lots of Carpenters-songs: Close to you, We've Only.., Sweet Sweet Smile, Jambalaya(their version)etc., and their Christmas-tunes. But personally, I have too much respect, I'd rather not touch their songs. Does it sound weird?

:)welcome Foochan..what an interesting life you have led and still are! Always great to meet up with another fan. My first Carpenters album and the second album of any kind I believe that I owned was Close to You and I was 13. I always loved them as well as some country music growing up. My mom learned to play the piano at one time, but, I never had the patience to keep practicing. I took music in jr. hi school just because I had to, but, I never learned it. I took guitar lessons at one time too since my bro. and many of my own relatives also did. and I learned it some, but then married life and work set in and I had to sell my guitar. Anyway, after Karen died, I couldn't bear to listen to any of their music..it was too painful. Then after about 3 yrs. or less, I just had to. and now own even more of their music. Much of it I don't ever recall hearing before. Anyway, so it goes. welcome again

thank you smoothie, i can totally relate to your saying that it was too painful to listen to their stuff after her death. Recently I got ahold of old documents of theirs through the Japanese fansite. Watching their debut and their famous TV-appearences, interviews and all is very emotional.
