Hey Enigma and everyone, I agree - this is a very interesting topic - and a great debate. Though all we can do is speculate because the only two people who ever understood their relationship I guess was Rich and Karen.... Cheers, L

Hi Leo ... I agree Leo that sometimes we overlook the fact that Richard was often underappreciated or overshadowed by the popularity of Karen even though he had so much to do with what we hear in Carpenters music. Its all in the perception. That is probably what Karen felt a lot of the times. She was always downplaying her role and pushing recognition toward Richard. I think she was very much a team player and didn't like it that her brother was often overlooked by the masses, so to speak.

Yes, Karen really did play down her role as the star in the show. I think she loved Richard so much and did not want to be "bigger" than him or more popular. I think she wanted people to see tham as equivalent.
On the other hand when Karen did become the natural star of the show I seems like Richard never was jealous or upset about it. It was evident from early on that it was Karen's voice that would get the record deals. Look what happened with Magic Lamp - Richard was more than happy that they wanted to sign Karen as a solo act. All he wanted was a foot in the door. Richard wanted to write and produce music. With Karen his dreams came true. They were a perfect team.
