8-)Was listening to the C's 35th Annv. Gold cd and find I always hit the repeat button when I hear "It's Going to Take Some Time" ..Seems there should be at least one more verse or instrumental there cuz it ends too soon for me... I also find this very true when I hear "For All We Know"...I absolutely love it... .....So, perhaps this is the case with other songs of the C's ...for all you folks out there... AND/ OR PERHAPS SONGS ALSO YOU THINK GO ON TOO LONG... .... One song I think seems too long is "Because We are in Love"...it's a great most beautiful song...just seems a little lengthy... AND YOU KNOW out there that this does not mean I don't enjoy the C's on just about all their songs.. .......anyway, just wondering...

What an excellent topic Kathy...
I've always felt "Dancing In The Street" should have been a bit longer. This was taken from the 1978 TV Special "Space Encounters", Richard said he could have repeated a verse and made the song longer - but decided to keep it as it was. At 1 minute and 50 seconds this great upbeat song always ends too soon.
I've heard it rumored that there is a full length studio recording of the song which was finished in 1978 and was almost released as a single.

Yeah Kathy, great topic!! I agree with Rick, Danding in the streets should have been longer. I'd also love to hear complete versions of "Any Day Now", "Make it easy on yourself"and "Walk on By (with Bacharach arrangement done for Dionne Warwick)".
Regards
Jorge

I'm guessing that since "Johnny Angel" is part of a medley that the whole song is not song. I've never heard the original, therefore not the whole song.
This is one of my favorites from the "Now and Then" album and I wished there was a full-length version of this.

Just wonder Why the C's only came out only with the medley on those...perhaps didn't want to "steal the thunder" from Warwick, because I think she was their friend.

I have heard it sung by some group from the 60's and that's why I say that. I'm sure Rick knows for sure. I really love those low low notes Karen hits singing that especially near the end.

I agree Karen sang "Johnny Angel" beautifully deep and rich. She did a far superior recording of this song then Shelly Fabares did in 1963. I'm sure you all remember Shelley. She first came to fame as daughter Mary Stone on the Donna Reed Show and then later as Coach's wife on the TV seires "Coach". Shelley's version of "Johnny Angel" is pretty good - but Karen took the song to the next level, her voice is perfect for this song and Richard's arrangement is outstanding. I would have certainly loved to hear a full length recording of this song from the 1973 Oldies Medley featured on the "Now And Then" album.
Another one is "Make It Easy On Yourself" from the extended live recording of the Bacharach / David medley. Karen really sings this one with all her heart and I love the part where she goes up an octave. Great song and Richard's arrangement on this one blows all other versions out of the water. Definitely would have loved to hear a longer full length version of this one.
Kathy... to answer your question the Carpenters' recording of "Johnny Angel" was a short medley recording of only one minute and thirty seconds. Though, the original recording of it was pretty short also only about two minutes and fifteen seconds - so it wouldn't have taken much more for the Carpenters to have to a full length version.

Hey Rick, I think there is a longer version of "Make It Easy On Yourself". I think (but I could be wrong) that I've heard them perform a longer version of it on a TV special that I have. If I remember correctly, they have an orchestra behind them when they sing it.

It was performed on the 1980 special "Music, Music, Music" as part of a medley with Sing, We've Only Just Begun and Someday. ?Although this version is over two minutes long - it's still not a complete full length recording - it's missing a verse and some instrumental parts.

This might sound really weird - but I kinda wish that there was a full version of the Morton's Potato chips commercial - even on that brief recording Karen's voice is achingly beautiful! While I think about it - wouldn't it've been great to hear a longer version of the Japanese chocolate commercial too "from the heart comes the rose...."? One of Richard's strength's as an arranger was making sure that each track lasted just long enough to satisfy the listener and leave them wanting more without dragging them out FOREVER! The Beatles were good at that too. I guess radio stations then (and even now)wouldn't have played long singles - did that have to do with the space on a vinyl record? Anyway, if you think about it, very few Carpenter's tracks are more than 4 minutes (with the exception of the more "novelty" tracks like "Calling Occupants", "Argentina" and "Because We Are In Love" etc), and many people often comment how short the album running times are! Just imagine how many more Carpenters songs we would have to treasure if Richard and Karen had had the time to include a few more tracks on each album?! Leo

;Dthanks for the info. Rick ...actually you answered another question of mine which was in the back of my mind...about S. Fabares...I couldn't recall whether it was J. Angel she recorded End of the World, I do know she did a good job with it, but of course, she's not Karen. ???I do love the Ella Fitzgerald and P. Como medleys done on As Time Goes By. I think it's been mentioned of how great it would be, if Karen had recorded full length versions of some songs she "medley-ed" on there...such as "My Funny Valentine", "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "It's Impossible".

Skeeter Davis recorded "End Of The World" originally.

I'd like for the Suntory Pop's to be complete songs - both versions. I'd also like the M. Chocolate song to be longer...complete with bridge, et all....and GOOD FRIENDS ARE FOR KEEPS. I love that song, and use it quite often in compliations I make for my friends. Don't let your empty room ever get you down...you can fill the silence with a smile...... And don't let the crowds on the street make you feel like you were just a stranger in town......... If you feel unhappy, or if you wanna weep, or you want a warm word before you sleep, REMEMBER Good Friends are Forever.....Good Friends ARE forever.... Good friends are for Keeps! I think the commercials were stellar - and would love to have heard more of these fine quality musical ditties. Thanks, everyone, for being my Good Friends. Tim

I also would like For all W. Know and This Masquerade to be longer. I am aware that R. and K. were involved in commercials that have been mentioned. They sound fun. I can imagine why you all would like them longer. I think on the Road Ode site, they did feature a clip of a Morton's chip commercial. Another time it featured R. and K. plugging for I think "don't drink and drive" ad. ???anyway, I'm glad for your input. ..........I also wish FROM THIS MOMENT ON was longer.s

Leo You asked the question about the vinyl here....and I'm not positive about that, but can answer the question about the length of songs they "used" to play on the radio (see, age DOES have it's advantages - just ask DAVE) ....anyway - Radio stations used to not play anything over 3:05. After that, they would need to do a station identification or at the very least a sponsors commercial ad. I can even remember when the DJ's used the 45's, before going to the actual albums (doesn't this sound weird, now - considering we use CD's?) But yeah, they would have two turntables (used to also have a big window where we could watch them work - ONLY ONE - there were never TWO dj's at the same time. One 45 would be playing, and they would have the other "cued-up" ready to go. It was an interesting process. I would guess the 45's WOULD, indeed, only hold so many minutes, however, they began to make mini albums out of 45's, and some of them would actually have two or three songs on a side. Tim
