Hi enigma,
Thanks for expanding on your perceptions. I think part of Karen's appeal is that her soothing, mature, reassuring voice seems to be that of a close friend or a personal confidante's --- someone you can trust and empathize with easily. Even though we don't know her in reality, many of us feel as if we are familiar her life experiences, and she with ours. She sings from the heart and makes a deep connection with her audience. (Of course, in retrospect, if any of us really knew and understood Karen and the nature of anorexia at the time, perhaps there would have been more hope for her in conquering her self-doubts about her body image and sense of isolation.) The hallmark of many great artists is that they make you want to identify with, care about, and root for them --- and she has such a quality.
