In many ways, I remember the day so clearly. As many of you know, I almost lost my daughter the very same day from a choking incident. Fortunately, her life was spared, but the day remains an infamous one for me in more ways than one. Today, I was in my car a great deal of the day. Knowing I would be, I took the SACD of Carpenters with me. What a wonderful time I had, just singing along, listening intently, and enjoying the wonderful voice of Karen Carpenter. I thought a lot about the fact that this anniversary of Karen's passing is coming up, and how deeply saddened it makes me feel. There were so many more things musically that Karen could have accomplished. So many genre's she could/should have been able to explore. Yet, as I listened, I knew that no one poured more of themselves totally heart and soul into a song than Karen did, and so, for all of the wonderful masterpieces that Karen sang, and the tunes that she played the drums on, I am thankful!!! I am thankful that I can hear her any time I wish, simply by the pressing of a button. I attempt to honor Karen each time I listen to the beautiful music she made, and I am truly grateful for each and every wonderful note she sang. We love you, Karen A. Carpenter, and remember you most especially on this day when our world lost a beautiful soul with the voice of an angel. We thank you for the music you so freely gave us. Tim

;D 8-)Very well put Tim. Today i once again watched most of the K.C. story, even though i saw it not terribly long ago. A lot of it is that I really enjoy the music...I think most of the songs played in the movie are really Karen singing, perhaps all of them. In any case, even though a great deal has happened since that show was made and since Karen passed, the actors are superb. Of course, i can bearly stand to see all the conflict portrayed and illness, i do like to see those actors...those events played out. I love and adore the C's always have. .... I love to see Richard as he is now and with a wonderful family and am thankful the music lives on. .....It says somewhere in the Bible that in heaven we'll sing a "new song"....Karen is still singing... ...........Karen, i hope you now know a real peace and joy. You continue to touch many lives just as you always did. Your extraordinary beautiful voice, and the person you were ...your love continues. Thank you Karen. Thank you Richard. ;D

I write this knowing that Karen can read this... Long ago, and many light-years away, two lives were created, separated by five years and 400 miles. While you and your brother were setting the music world on fire, I was learning how things worked, and your life was a bookmark, always there, me not understanding why I saw you as a sister. Time passed, and my career was set in motion, while yours stalled. There were things in your background that most of us knew nothing about, but they were set in motion, and on a cold February morning, ten days before my career would change direction, you left us. There were no encores, no comebacks. The silence was deafening, as a "kind of hush" descended over the world. The shockwave extends out 23 light years in time and distance, when the voice of an angel ceased to be heard over the radio waves. The tears I was shedding on February 4, 2003, were not for the 20th anniversary of your untimely passing, but for seven intrepid explorers whose craft disintegrated as they returned home from the "top of the world". My tears, my emotions, led me to throw myself at solving the causes, and a short 14 months later you would return, for reasons I still cannot comprehend, unhappy, bitter. Over the next six months, I would learn from you, and you would learn from me. I've cried a river of tears, much as I did then, but for a much different reason. I have shared my life with you, and in return you have given me insights I never could have imagined. Today, you continue to touch lives, both through your life's work, and how people still love you. Although we struggle with your absence, we do so knowing that we'll all get to meet you someday. From your viewpoint, we're already there. Thank you, my dear sister. Enjoy the sunshine...

February 4, 1983 was a sad day in the history of music. It seemed like it hadn't been too long after John Lennon's death. I wasn't initially saddened. I think I was in shock. It took me several days to finally feel the sadness and realize that there would not be anymore new recordings by my favorite female singer. I then took her records out and began playing them. I remember being hooked on "Live In Japan" - I especially played "Leader Of The Pack" quite a bit.
Now 23 years later it is still a sad memory. At times I'm even bitter about her death - because I always felt she should have been around to record new music - experimenting with new sounds and styles. She was an adventurer - she would have given us all types of exciting wonderful music.
Today in her honor I will be playing her solo album and her nine unreleased solo tracks. I'm playing her solo music because these were her songs. They were 100% who Karen was and wanted to be. Today is about Karen Carpenter.

It is amazing how much one person can emotionally fill a persons soul and mind by the love of that persons soul with just a voice. But it is more than just a voice. We all share a love for karen and what she gave to us and the world through her love of music. Little did she know at the time just how powerful of an imprint she would leave us all with. I have been listening to karen all week. I miss her more every day. The day karen passed a friend called me to tell me she had just heard the news. I immediately called a+m records to find out if it was true. I could not believe it when they confirmed what I asked. I called a radio station in Bangor Maine and asked them to play something from Karen. Our station at that time played the carpenters all the time. The disc jockey played, IGTSTTT. As I listend to the words so closely little did I know at the time just how important those words would mean later on. You see I didn't know karen was that ill until later on after all we learned through the years. But I still look back to that day as one that changed my life for ever. And what I can say is I loved you miss karen and still do. You bring so much love to me every day, and for the rest of my life. Missing you in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Bill

CELEBRATION OF LIFE
We can celebrate your life Karen, and the joy you brought to countless people, countries all over the world. Who knew that when you were born, that you would reach into people's souls with a gift you had been given. We can celebrate and rejoice in the fact that your father had such a love for music, and passed it on to you. As well as the fact that your grandparents and mother, also possessed strong and beautiful singing voices, which we know, passed it on to you. We celebrate the fact that you worked hard at your craft, even thru difficult times when no one seemed to notice your music that you and your brother Richard created. Finally we can celebrate that you found a place to create your music, at A&M Records. And the rest is history. The Gold Records. The Gold and Platinum Albums. Number One Records. Albums that stand the test of time. Close To You. Carpenters. A Song For You. Now and Then. Horizon. A Kind of Hush and so on. Singles of magestic beauty. Solitaire. Rainy Days and Mondays. We've Only Just Begun. Look To Your Dreams. Love Me For What I Am. Superstar. Grammy Awards. American Music Award. Trendsetters Award. George Peabody Award. Academy Award Nomination for Bless The Beasts and the Children. Best Selling Album Status for The Singles 1969-1973.
We can celebrate the fact that you rose above in terms of talent. You had class. You had integrity. You had a gift that you willingly shared. We celebrate that you recorded a solo album of your own determination. You succeeded in trying new styles. And it was a good album. A Great Album! Even though it was not released then, it gave us now, the ability to listen and reminisce and imagine what might have been.
We celebrate the fact that you were a human being with frailties like the rest of us. You felt insecurity, instability, and had fears. Much of that came thru your music, which set you apart from other artists. You didn't just sing it...from some deep part of you, you shared some of the pain you were going thru...thru your music and the emotion that poured out of a song. We celebrate that you took the time to conquer your personal demons in 1982. What a big undertaking that was. That says a lot about you! You put your life on hold, to gain life. We celebrate the fact that you had a lot to live, and you wanted to live! You made that known to many friends, including Olivia Newton John and Dionne Warwick.
We celebrate your life and know that you passed on to another existence where you are at total peace. We celebrate the fact that you wanted to help others suffering from what you went thru, when you got back to Hollywood. But God had other plans...and since then, thousands and thousands have been saved. What a gift you gave...your voice, your experiences, your battle...We know you probably would have chosen life had it been given to you. But I am sure you are looking down and understand HIS plan...We don't always understand HIS ways, but HIS ways are above our own...
Rest In Peace Karen!!
You are loved and so missed!
Cameron

Cameron Cam, what an amazing tribute to Karen. Your wonderfully stated words have brought tears to my eyes - just as Karen's beautiful voice has the ability to bring out so many emotions in me.
so far I've listened to "Horizon", "As Time Goes By", "Karen Carpenter" and the unreleased solo tracks. Now I will move on to "Close To You" and "A Kind Of Hush".
Hi Cooling... welcome to the forum. Thank you for posting your Karen shrine. She ceretainly does deserve to have candles lit in her honor.

Hi Cooling - welcome, and what a beautiful photo you chose to place your candle in front of. I'm sure Karen is smiling at you right this minute for your tribute to her. Whew, Cam. Nice post. Beautifully worded. Thanks. I've enjoyed listening to our sweet Karen sing these past days, as I always do. What a wonderful voice - such a wonderful person - and what an incredible legacy she leaves us. In so many ways, it seems as though Karen just left us - but alas, it has truly been 23 years ago. That thought amazes me. What she could have done in 23 years. I shudder to think..... Nice thoughts, everyone. Thanks for sharing them. It's wonderful for me to be able to share these feelings/emotions, finally, after so many years of keeping them to myself. So again, thanks for listening to my thoughts and feelings, and a big thanks for sharing yours with me. Tim

OMG everyone is so nice here thx for the comments about the *shrine picture* YesterdayOnceMore you made me cry.. I really needed to wait a min. until I'm able to write this 'cause of what you wrote --> "I'm sure Karen is smiling at you right this minute for your tribute to her." I think a board is a great way to have contact to people who can imagine what others feel and where we can share everything. no matter if memories, stuff, feelings,....
