All of My Life (1969) still goes wow. In the Essential Collection booklet there is a picture of Karen looking tomboyish (under All my life description) but you would not think so when hear her in this song, her voice is super gorgeous.

Well I have just been going through my collection as I often do as they are never far from the cd drawer on the stereo, and I have to say apart from saying all of them which could be very true. 'tryin to get the feeling' oh my god that little gravel in her voice has to pull at anyones heart stings. Many years ago I wrote a song called 'Cold mid 20 year old' which I have performed, and also a song that I collaberated with a friend of mine'Driving South' how I wish k.c could have sung these. anyone else wrote songs.

Hi CenturyCity - yes, I've written some songs, and I think others here on the forum have, as well. There are a few that I have written that I would have loved Carpenters to have recorded. Not only do I think that had Karen sung the songs they might have actually been decent to listen to, because anything/everything she sang seemed to turn to gold, but also Richard's arrangements were, well, magical. He could take a bank commercial, for goodness sake, and turn it into their signature song! Not many have that sort of talent. Richard does in a big way. Good for you that you've written songs - anything you recorded and can share with us? It's great to have you on the forum with us, CC. Best to you (and to all)! Tim c

Some WOW songs and the distinctive qualities I like in particular:
This Masquerade - deep, dark, smoky, sophisticated, jazzy - quintessential C's!
Superstar - orchestration evocative of medieval times long ago and far away
Heather - showcases R's mastery of very lush orchestration without any vocals
Without a Song - rich vocal harmony without orchestration
If I Had You - K building up to a musical tag of different voices and "personalities"
Bless the Beasts and Children - love the clear resonance of the piano, and the riffs cascading down to the final verse
We've Only Just Begun - breezy, magical flute bookends and the sudden stillness "...when evening comes..."
Sing - fat harmony in fourth verse when the C's jump in with the children's choir
Bacharach-David+ Medley (from Music, Music, Music) - really FAT harmonies

You certainly have a way with words.
I am particularly interested in the fact that you included "Sing" as one of your WOW songs. I agree this song is truly a WOW song. The lyric itself is amazing. The message is simple yet very strong. It's a message to remember. And Karen's voice is outstanding on this one - as well as Richard's beautiful arrangement.

The songs I've always favoured are....
"This Masquerade" "A Song for You" "Where do I go from here" "Let Me be the One" "If We Try" "Superstar" "Only Yesterday" "I won't last a day without You" "I believe You" "Touch me when we're Dancing".......I could go on!!!
I just love the songs where Karen's vocals are lower and smoother and soothing in register! Some of you have mentioned favourite songs here that I have not yet heard......don't know how that is possible! 8)
Greetings to all!! I am new here!!!

Thanks for the direct link, Rick...it was helpful!!!
Now, concerning the songs you asked me about, that I have not yet heard from the Carpenters......these are the songs:
"Without a Song" "Strike up the Band" medly "Now a days clancy can't even Sing" "Crescent Noon".....but I'm thinking I do know this one?? "Road to Ode" "Love me for what I am" "He came here for me" "All my Life"
Now, it just may be that I don't reckognize the title of these songs.....but there seems to be quite a few songs here I've missed out on thru the years!! I didn't own a few of their albums, but the ones I did have, I wore out listening to..... over and over!!!!
Thanks for the asking, Rick!

Hi Heartwaves, I wouldn't be surprised if you've heard most of these songs you listed with the exception of the ones from the "As Time Goes By" album released in 2001.
Here's a breakdown of your list:
"Without a Song" - From the album "As Time Goes By"
"Strike up the Band" medly - from the album "Live At The Palladium" - this is Karen's outstanding drum solo medley.
"Now a days clancy can't even Sing" - A great folk / psychedelic song from the 1969 album "Ticket To Ride"
"Crescent Noon".....but I'm thinking I do know this one?? From the "Close To you" album.
"Road to Ode" - You have to know this classic Carpenters tune from the "A Song For You" album.
"Love me for what I am" - Another classic tune. This one is from the album "Horizon". It's co-written by Palma Pascale. I have done an all original brand new interview with Palma which will be featured exclusively on The Carpenters Online Web Site in the next few days.
"He came here for me" - A beautiful spiritual song from the album "An Old Fashioned Christmas"
"All my Life" - "All Of My Life" is a beautiful ballad from the 1969 album "Ticket To Ride".
Hope this helps... [/center]
