This is one of the best documentaries made on the Carpenters. There's a lot of excellent footage. I really like the part where Richard is playing piano and Karen is singing "Yesterday Once More", just her voice and the piano.

Well, I just finished watching it. Now that's an emotional roller coaster! You know how it's going to end but it doesn't matter. I was all choked up and my eyes were watering (about as close to tears as you can get.) I've never seen most if not all of the material in this show. Now, of course, I want to get copies of the television specials. I thought they should have spent just a bit more time on the solo album and not made it sound like it was a failure musically.
Now, a question. I ordered and received the Close To You DVD before learning of the PBS special. I haven't opened it yet. What extra materials are on the DVD? Should I keep it or try to return it?

Hi All, I have always loved this special and I remember watching it alone and of course, crying when they showed footage of Karen's funeral outside and her casket. Especially the part where Richard seems bewildered and alone. That one gets to me every time. But I love the extended dvd and video which has the extra songs including A PLACE TO HIDEAWAY and the gorgeous AVE MARIA. Out of this world!!
My thoughts, Cameron

Hi Cameron,
Geez, just when I think I've got everything. I honestly don't think I have this DVD. Can I get it in stores? I have two DVD's but the way it is described by you and Ming too I don't believe I have this one with footage of things, etc.
Please let me know where I can get ahold of this?
Thanks
Beaner

Okay. I'm sold! I'm keepin' it!
Can you imagine the shock of family, friends, and fans in the days following Karen's death?
They knew she wasn't well, but to die at such a young age?
I was amazed that Richard and Petula (sp?) could make it through that interview (Richard's) and performance (Petula's) right after Karen's death. I absolutely know I couldn't do it.

Thanks Rick but I DO have it. Geez, I bought it for myself this past Christmas and when I took the tree down I put it with my Carpenter CD/DVD collections for later viewing and forgot about it until now after reading about it here on the forum on what actually is in it. Guess what? That's my plans for tonight.... I'll let you guys know what I think too. I'm sure I already know though. Beaner

Another part of this DVD that I like a lot is seeing the short clip of K&R in 1969 performing on the All American College Show. They're billed as The Richard Carpenter Trio and they are doing the song " Dancing In The Street" and Karen is singing and playing the drums ;Dsimultaneously. I would really love to see this entire performance... what a treat that would be.

An entire DVD of the full performances of all the partial clips on Close to You: Remembering the Carpenters would be a great release. I would certainly buy it.

I watched the PBS version of this DVD two weeks ago as part of the station's Winter pledge drive. I made a pledge and received the DVD yesterday. The bonus material is fantastic (especially the complete Petula Clark "For All We Know" tribute). Does anyone know which television appearance the video of (They Long to Be) Close to You comes from? Wikipedia suggests it came from the Make Your Own Kind of Music tapings but there already are two different performances from those broadcasts. The set also does not look like any one used on the show.
