Thanks, O.E. for keeping the log. Glad you enjoyed it, and it proves what I'd been thinking - Merry Christmas Darling is by far the most popular of the Carpenters Christmas Tunes. I'm with you - I'm very pleased to know that at least in some parts of the world, there are others by Carpenters that got some good air play - Silent Night, Have Yourself, and all the others. Great news. Thanks again for keeping the tally. It was a fun idea. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All! Tim

I know the final tally has been posted, but the local KC station just played First Snowfall of Winter/Let It Snow. I've never heard it over the radio before ... so I was just excited and thought I'd post this message anyway!
Thanks, O.E., for being our official tally keeper. You did a fantastic job!
*The DJ just announced they are going to play Carpenters "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" shortly. This is another song I have never heard via radio air play!

Even though the tally is over, I'm still hearing Christmas songs. Just an hour ago I heard Merry Christmas Darling. I'm glad the powers that be didn't just cut the Christmas music off cold turkey. After all, there are 12 days of Christmas!

I also heard three Carpenters Christmas tunes in the past two days... which hopefully will get added to the log.
December 25 "Merry Christmas Darling" - one time "Home for the Holidays" - one time
December 26 "The Christmas Song"
Good survey... I am happy to see one of my favorites "Home For The Holidays" was so popular. I heard it tons of times on KOST and a few other stations.

I just heard I'll Be Home For Christmas.
I'm happy the music lingers, though. I wasn't really ready to give it up, yet.

Thanks for the participation! Thanks, O.E., for keeping the tallies. As most of us expected, the Carpenters' trademark "Merry Christmas Darling" got the most airplay, and the songs tend to weigh heavily toward the "Christmas Portrait" album rather than the "An Old-Fashioned Christmas" album. I notice that many of the songs on the list have to do with missing or rekindling personal relationships with friends and loved ones. However, I am surprised the other Carpenters' single, the jazz-infused "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," got so few tallies. Although it received a fair amount of airplay when it was first released, perhaps there is a disconnect between its common association with being a "school kid's" song and its more sophisticated "adult" arrangements here. I am also surprised that the beautifully-sung "Ave Maria" (perhaps too "multi-purpose" a song for just Christmas?) and "Little Altar Boy" (perhaps too "serious" for commercial radio and in-store ambient music?) did not make it to the list at all. This random survey has been a most interesting snapshot of what's happening in holiday music broadcast today. Thanks to O.E. for coming up with this great idea and all those who participated!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. Since there were several more additional hears after the "final" log post and there is perhaps a prospect for some more"New Year's Eve" and "First Snowfall" encounters, we can wait until about Jan.2, and then do one more listing. So go ahead with any additional posts for the next 6 days!

Yes, it was a pleasant surprise to hear Christmas music after Christmas. I was totally surprised to hear "The Christmas Song" after Christmas - as before christmas I hadn't heard it once on our sunny Southern Californian shores (well I did hear it quite a bit by Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis).
Now, if only more radio stations would pick up on "What Are You doin' New Year's Eve" - you know what we need to do - get on the web sites of our favorite/local radio stations and send requests to hear the song. I will usually send two requests for the same song - maybe a day apart - that seems to catch the DJ's attention.
