A week or two ago, the subject of Christmas music on commercial radio stations was discussed a bit. I have since found out that at least one station here has already begun continual Christmas music, and on Saturday I heard the Carpenters version (the best one, as far as I'm concerned) of "Home For The Holidays." As you hear a Carpentes song on commercial radio this season, report the song title here and we can keep a count of what songs are played how many times- and on about Dec. 26, have an unofficial "Carpenters Christmas Champion." Any predictions?

What a GREAT idea, O.E. I'm all for it. As for predictions, I have two....Merry Christmas Darling I think will win top honors, but I would take a guess that I'll Be Home For Christmas or Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas will come in a healthy second. Since this is TOTALLY Carpenters related, I'm going to move the thread to the main board. Great idea. Thanks. Tim

My prediction definitely "Merry Christmas Darling" will by far be the most played Carpenters Christmas tune on the radio. Second, though, will most likely be "Home For The Holidays" as that one gets tons of airplay - especially here in Southern California.

Great to hear the predictions- I would agree that "Mery Christmas Darling" will probably be the victor. As for the early results, "Home For The Holiday has an early lead- keep the results coming in.

On my morning drive I heard "The Christmas Waltz" - which is one I don't hear to often on the radio followed that with "Home for The Holidays". These are the first C's Christmas songs I've heard this year - before today I really didn't take the time to find any stations playing Christmas music. I will keep listening for "Merry Christmas Darling" as I know I will hear that one quite a bit. Let's keep the log going - it would be great to get an honest assessment as to what the radio stations are playing. Also heard:Barbra Steisand's recording of "Ave Maria". Babs is a great singer but I just do not care for her version of this song. Could be that I'm very spoiled by Karen's Angelic rendition of the song. Karen was born to sing this one (and all Christmas music). Elton John's "Step Into Christmas - I actually like this song and Elton is one of my all-time favorites - but he really does not have the voice for Christmas music - love it anyway.

Rick, I was interested to hear of your having heard Babara Streisand's version of "Ave Maria". I haven't heard it but if I ever hear anyone who sings it as well as Karen Carpenter, I'll eat my hat (a dangerous proposition since I have no hair.) I went into this log with the thought that many of the C's greatest Christmas songs (such as "He Came Here For Me" and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?") probably wouldn't make it onto the air but the inclusion of "The Christmas Waltz" gives me optimism. I also agree with you that Elton John is a voice for the ages- his early 70's song "Daniel" is a favorite of mine.

WJ7, Are the 2 Darlings, 2 Christmas Songs and 1 Have... Christmas all new hears today, or does it reflect a cumulative total for what you have heard this season? (I want to avoid a "Chicago style" election here. Ha!) O.E.

(I want to avoid a "Chicago style" election here. Ha!) O.E. Yes, they are new 'hears' for today. They are not totals ... and I've heard another Merry Christmas Darling since that post. As of RIGHT NOW my TOTALS (since your idea of posting the number of times a song is played) are: Merry Christmas Darling ............................. 6 times Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas ......... 3 times Christmas Song ........................................ 3 times Home For The Holidays .............................. 1 time Do You Hear What I Hear ........................... 1 time This will catch me up to date (from start to today). Sorry about any confusion. I will try to post end of day totals from here on.

Wow, Wisejester7, that's a lot of plays for "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". I've never heard it played here on Southern California radio - but I'm hoping to hear it - as it's a fine song - so, I'll be listening for it. What station do you listen to? I want to get in on it - they play lots of Carpenters - fourteen times in less than a full day - that is great!
O.E... On Streisand's "Ave Maria"... the song sounded very different to me - but I recognized the words - but I just did not care for her rendition. It seemed forced to my ears. It did not seem to be natural for her. It almost sounded somewhat baroque style.
O.E. you also commented on "The Christmas Waltz" - I've heard it a few times on the radio in Christmas' past - though it doesn't come close to the airplay that "Merry Christmas Darling" or "Home For The Holidays" get.
On "The Christmas Song" - I have heard Carpenters' recording on the radio in years past - but generally it's Nat King Cole's rendition radio stations prefer to play - so don't hear Carpenters' too much on the airwaves.
Oh and as for eating that hat... don't worry I don't think that will be happening any time soon.

I didn't hear 14 Carpenters Christmas songs on the radio in one day. That WOULD be cool. I'm averaging 4 to 5 songs per day.
The radio station is KUDL 98.1 out of Kansas City.

WJ7, thanks for the clarification- from this point on I'll consider all posts as reflecting new hears. Later today or tonight I'll give the current overall totals. (Most of the data to this point is yours.) Four or five Carpenter songs per day is still a great average- considering that you don't listen 24 hrs. daily, KUDL must give the C's a great amount of overall air time. (Maybe since the station is in K.C., they feel a special connection.) Rick, it's interesting that "Have Yourself A..." isn't heard much on the radio in Calif.- here it's quite popular. And yes, I think Nat King Cole's rendition of "The Christmas Song" is considered by most people to be the standard.

Hi all... I've never heard Carpenters' "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "White Christmas" or "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" (anyway the latter I haven't heard in the last 20 years) on Southern California radio. Though, certainly every Christmas Carpenters are played a good amount - it's mostly "Merry Christmas Darling" - but there are deifinitely a good half dozen other songs which manage to also be played.
Hey Wisejester7... I just checked out KUDL... looks like a great station... I am joining their VIP Club so I can listen to them online. fun... fun... fun.
