***Great Album***

This seemed like a BIG departure from their previous albums. They were widening their 'horizons' and pushing for fresh and different music. It is for this reason that many think the album wasn't as good as their others. Perhaps a surprise, at first, but the C's are so infectious that you can't help but go with the flow.

Personally, I like this album...I have heard people say how disappointed they were in this particular offering, but I liked it. I was so glad to have SOMETHING by Carpenters released, at that point in time, that even though some of the tunes represented in this compilation are not my all time favorites, there are some beautiful numbers and, especially at that time, it was great by me.

My feelings have always been that just because it's different doesn't mean it's not good. "Passage" was definitely different for Carpenters and it did surprise many long time fans. Though it was time for Carpenters to try something different. With time, had they kept with this new sound, they would have garnered an entirely new legion of fans.

When the album was released I fell in love with it immediately. For the longest time I considered this to be Carpenters' very best work of their entire output - now of course with more experience in music I have come to realize that accolade actually belongs to "Horizon".

Musically this album is just as outstanding and as varied as any album the Carpenters have released. The album is a gigantic bold step forward. In my mind the Carpenters proved (once again) that they are more than just singers of love songs. There's nothing wrong with a singer of love songs - but Carpenters have always been that and much much more. Look at some of the early examples which put them in a class beyond their contemporaries - songs such as "All I Can Do", "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing", "Crescent Noon" and "Another Song" - these are not your typical songs for a group who records love songs. This is because Carpenters are not your typical band. They were different, they were exceptional, they were even peculiar - but they were not typical or ordinary.

I salute the Carpenters for being brave enough to go out on a limb and record the types of songs they really wanted to record.

For these reasons I love "Passage". From songs like "B'wana She No Home" to the trippy "Calling Occupants..." and the upbeat country-rock tune "Sweet Sweet Smile" to the symphonic love song "I Just Fall In Love Again" - the Carpenters won in every way with "Passage".

I was so xcited bout this LP. Tho on initial buying I was disapointed by the fact that it had only 8 tracks on it ( alot of other acts were doin the same thing at the time) & this was picked up by all the reviewers of this LP as another missile in which to slag it off. However 3 songs were over 5 mins long & it in my view was the Cs keepin up with the trend at the time ( I was always narked that it was only the Cs that were castorgised for doin this & any other artist that kept up with current trends were always patted on the back.) I wasnt overly keen on the artwork & the fact that it didnt contain the famous Cs LOGO but I grew to love it as always was the case with Cs LPs. It had advance orders of over 50.000 copies & debited at 37 jumpin to 13 then peaking at 12 on our LP charts. Masterpiece. Carps1000

The best album is 'Horizon'. I will consider 'Passage' as the second best album. The songs are very beautiful.
